Hi Gang,
I think I need to switch up to a more serious hunting crowd.
Got back from first rifle season out past Meeker.
Just got into the thick of the animals then my bud falls off his horse, loses his GPS in the rain. Says we gotta leave NOW due to the miserable rain. Now don't get me wrong, if he was to have gotten hurt I would be the first to pack him off the mountain.........but go home cuz of rain??
This is the second time he has done this (yeah I know) I guess its nice to know that he won't do it again.
I got lucky and filled my tag last second but the third guy was out in the cold. BTW when we went home sun came out and stuff dried out.
What a waste of my vacation, travel, tags, horse rental..........etc.
Anyways if there are any serious hunters out there who have room for another hunter give me a shout.
"Have honey holes will share"
BTW I'm toying with the idea of going back again this year to hunt again.

I'm heading to Meeker on the first for 3rd. season. I have a cow tag for unit 22 and may purchase a buck tag for 23 when we get there. I didn't think I was going to be able to go and had to purchase a left over tag.

I've never hunted off of horses and would like to talk with you about it. I'm in Whittier (So. LA County), send me an email with a phone number if you get a chance.

Where are you located? I'm in San Diego.

I'm heading to Durango for the 3rd rifle season. I have a cow tag, but I may also pick up an OTC bull tag as that zone (75) allows for 2 tags. At least that's what the DFG lady in Durango told me over the phone.

I recently moved back to SoCal after living in CO for 8 years. None of my local friends hunt so I'd like to find some guys around here that do. PM me if you're interested.

I also know guys that I will never hunt with again. Like the buddy of a buddy who deserted me on the mountain right after I put a bull elk down just before dark.

Guys I'm in the Van Nuys area (valley).
Fish Give me a shout and i'll walk you through the horse drama (just kidding), there are things you have to bring and ways of doing it. Theres no doubt that we have been hunting at a disadvantage for decades limiting our travels to our feet, horses can walk in the dark, in the snow, in the mud and muck while you stay warm and comfey. I'm pretty confident in the early seasons in unit 12, its really not a hard hunt with a good 4x4 and horses I can only imagine the later season will only be better (although colder).

SM I'm pretty familiar with the area above durango, I think its 71 including lone cone, above groundhog resevoir outside dry creek basin. A little familiar with the disappointment area.
I should be in mission bay and national city tomorrow if you know any local dives for good food let me know.
Guys feel free to give me a shout I'll be in in the morning till I leave for Sandy Eggo work 818 780 1594 cell 714 329-3030

Hey Alex,

There a ton of good places to eat down here, it just depends on what you're in the mood for. If you like really good, inexpensive seafood, then one of my favorite places is Bluewater Grill on India Street. South Beach on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach also has excellent fish, shrimp, or lobster tacos for like $3 apiece. If you like BBQ then try Phil's BBQ on Goldfinch in Hillcrest. Mexican food is also a good option too. It's hard to go wrong at any of the small, mom & pop taco shops around here.

I'm in Point Loma which is right next to Mission Beach. Give me a call at my office 619-223-3041 if you have any spare time.

31: Been there too. Had to ditch a half dozen whiners that thought they wanted to hunt. I found a few hardcore guys right here at JHO. They have a hard time keeping up with me, but I don't mind carrying their packs on the steep stuff. Actually, I'm twelve years older, and they kick myass. It's all about attitude and dedication. Mind over matter.

Thanks SM for the food,
Stopped by South Beach and enjoyed the fish tacos, they really load em up, I was very surprised. It was probably good that I overlooked the bucket of beer for $10.00 as it was a long drive home. I didn't wrap up till after 7 pm and I figured you already left the office. Next time I will make it for the half price happy hour from 5-6!
One track, I'm not a kid but I seem to be able to keep up with em (I think when you get older you try harder). Rite now I can hike around 10 miles per day, however NO WAY at 9000 feet. Last time I drew Arizona I was in good shape and between the lower altitude and being less some weight I was hiking double that with a light pack and rifle. I see some guys in thier 60's way back in there, most of em are thin and in good shape, so its possible I can hunt a couple more decades.

Yeah South Beach does a good job with their tacos. Next time you're there be sure and wash them down with some Ballast Point beer. Good stuff.

I know what you're talking about with being in shape. When I lived in CO I was running, hiking, skiing, and climbing 14er's a lot and all at 9000' or higher. I could walk up mountains all day long. Now that I'm living at sea level and have gained about 10-12 lbs from all the local mexican food, I'm a little worried. Our base camp will be at 10,300'. I shot a bull 2 season ago in that same area at 11,200'. I'm dreading the butt-kicking I'm going to receive from the altitude.

I hear ya Bertram, last year my hunting buddy stabbed himself in the leg while cleaning a deer and demanded I finish cutting up the rest of the deer, pack it out, cutting my hunt short so I could drive him to the hospital!

Yo Arrowslinger -- for your sake, I hope there's some sort of statue of limitations on that stabbing incident, cause I don't think LD is gonna ever let you live it down.

Hey Alex, we have a Blackfin 32 flybridge that I beleive was designed by the same dude that did many of the Berts including the 31. I caught my first striper in Cali from a beautiful 31 Bert. So I have been hunting elk with grandpa in CO for the last 3 years and he finally said "No Mas" at 80...I hope I can hunt that long! Anyway, I would be up for joining a new group for out of state elk/deer trips so let me know.

Nothing worse than lousy hunting partners. My old group broke up because two knuckleheads just couldn't get along. Like my dad always said. "You never know how somebody is until you go hunting with them."

Don't get me wrong guys, I'm not a maniac. I will back off and figure even cancell a trip it its just too nasty. But hunting and fishing can get uncomfortable at times.........its just part of the deal.
When I used to fish for a living I had to fish any water any time to support the family. However now I can stay in the shop and just get my hands dirty. More and more as I get older I LOOK for nice weather and conditions, however often when the conditions are right and the fish are around you gotta put up with some weather. Its just part of the deal if you want to be successful. The way I see it it's no different with hunting.
Pick a season, get, or worse yet draw a tag, drive a thousand miles........your kinda comitted.

Zimm, I assume Ray Hunt designed the 32?? I saw an extremely nice 32 rehab a few years ago in the Gardena area......very nice boat, unfortunatly rumors are that it sank. Lets go hunting give me a shout 714 329 3030

Diver, its pretty easy to stick youself in the foot or leg when your hunched over with a sharp knife tired with little sleep........grazed a new set of boots one year and another year nailed my right shin (still hiked back up the mountain to pack the other half)..........I can see where somebody could do themselves bad especially when tired hunting alone with no assistance, gotta be carefull out there, its not just your hunt but your buddies also.

BR, we paid for one whole season as many days as we wanted $350, so 75 dosen't sound out of line.

Chuck, good chatting on the phone and good luck in Meeker......wish I were there.

Hey just got back from Meeker 2nd season did real good a nice cow and a nice buck saw no bulls. Had to go solo this year last year hunted with a few guys from work in Idaho last year and just say never again. Nice guys at work but completly different on the hunt. If you need a hunting partner next year let me know going with a serious group of hunters would be nice.
