So I am going to be a little more specific with the request for information that I was looking for. I was planning on taking a pack, and walking into an area, camping in it and working the area for the time available (5-7 days). Water is critical in order to be able to do this. Has anyone been around this area (unit 72, Jarbidge, Wells NV, Deeth NV) ? Are the creeks that normally hold water running? It doesn't seem as though the drought that cal is in is as bad in northern Nevada. Is this accurate? I will be doing my homework over the next couple of weeks. Also have placed calls into the biologist in the area (not returned yet). Looking for a bit of help on the basic stuff, but also if you are willing to share some local knowledge of some good country that I could wonder around in.
I don't know what your packing capabilities are but it's not necessary to go down into the wilderness in my opinion to fill a cow tag. With that said the upper elevation areas will have flow down from the streams while if you drop off into that hell hole you will have to travel further to get to running water. The boundaries are marked fairly well and you deffinetly will be cutting down on the hunting traffic with your plan but if your knowledgable with how to pattern elk and same for hunters, harvesting a cow shouldn't be that difficult. My 14 yr old son and myself both have this same tag but my plan of attack will be quite different. I will be out scouting soon since my dad has the early season tag on Oct. 1st so I might have some intel I could pass on to you before your tag opens. This elk picture was taken in the 072 wilderness recently so if you see her please take her! She knocked the camera off and botched a very long hike in and set up trying to get a picture of the bull in that area that my co-worker will be trying to harvest.
