Remington and the military have produced a replacement round for the 5.56(223 remington)rifle round. Its the new 6.8x43mm,its built on the old .30Remington case shortened to 43mm and necked down to take .277 diameter(270-caliber)bullets.The good point is its identical in size to the 5.56mm and will function in all Ar-15,s and m-16 rifles via a new upper unit/barrel.At 300 yards the energy is similar to a 100-grain 243 Win. load making it a legitimate 250 yard deer round with the proper bullet...

I guess the military is finally getting the idea that a hyperactive 22 ain't the best thing for a military cartrige. Think they should have stayed with the 30 cal from the start? Why not make life easy & go with an easy to find round instead of making something new like the 243, 308, 7.62x39? Or go with a 6mm round already made on the 223 case like the 6x45mm also called the 6mm-223.

I hear only spec ops guys will be shooting the 6.8. The 5.56 NATO is with us for many years to come. Another interesting cartridge for accurate ARs is the 6.5 Grendel. It's a 6.5mm (.264) bullet in a AK case (7.62x39) High power shooters are switching over to get improved accuracy at 600 yds. A number of people are making AR uppers and it's getting more interest among match shooters than the 6.8 SPC.

As far as the military adoption of the 6.8, that is a dead issue. Remember, we are controlled by the bean counters and they are not about to intoduce yet another ammunition type into the inventory. It is a shame, but that's how it goes. Look for something like the 6x45 if we ever do upgrade. Same bolt, same magazine.
