New gun needs Hog!

Did a POR the end of Jan. I spotted a HUGE hog the other side of a ridge so I circled on top of it and stalked down to it. I got about 110 yards away and put one through his sweet spot (I think). Damn thing took off and a few minutes later I saw him going up the other side of the canyon haulin' a$$. I saw the dust come off of him right where I was aiming and I was aiming for his heart/lungs. I decided before I had ejected the spent round that I was buying a bigger gun; my .308 is now waiting for A zone to start again because it's hog hunting days are over. I'm sick of those things running away!
I just went down and started my ten day torture on a Tikka lite 7mm mag. and I can't wait! This will be my second Tikka and I love these guns; smooth, accurate, and lite. I'm going hunting near Salina in three weeks and I'm hoping to test it out:bounce-aqua: Anyone have any experience shooting hogs with a 7mm mag.?

I have been shoot a 7 mag since the early 80's and really
have not had many issues with lost game. But again shot placement
is still key. Shot 60 lb'er to 300 plus lb'ers and knocked them down.

Great all around caliber.

Could you give me the details of the ammo you were using, brand, bullet type & weight.
I've got some theories about terminal performance & non lead ammo.
I need info to work out some of the bugs in the performance reports I'm reading.
I'll be asking everybody using non lead for the same info.

I couldn't agree more on the T3 lite, I have both 270wsm and 300wsm model. Love it. The 7mm will perform flawlessly. But like everyone else is stating, proper placement shot is the key. Now this is just me, I use the heart and lung shot for medium or smaller size hog and for those really really good size boar, I always use shoulder blade placement shot. That 300wsm with 180g have always stop them on the track. Good luck on the testing of that 7mm. Keep us posted - hopefully with a picture of the hog. :smiley-mouse:

I was shooting Federal Vital Shok with 150 gr barnes triple shock; i really don't like this bullet, it seems to pass right through smaller game and fail to stop larger game. I don't want to use it in my 7mm but I don't reload (no time) so I don't have many choices. Im hoping that the increase in energy will help.

Hey guys i shoot a browning Abolt 7wsm and nailed many big pigs that normally just drop..but this weekend we got on a monster of a hog(see new thread) and at 80-100yrds i put a winchester etip 150gr through his 1-1/2 plate on the shoulder and let it go....no squeel....no thump.....he shot down hill and stumbled a lil...but kept going into fading light...no blood....nothing....see thread for the pics...found him 100yrds downhill broken leg, dead and foaming...but no exit wound or blood....skinned him only to find that the etip destroyed the shoulder and lungs...no exit....7wsm is a great round....but those hogs are tough SOB's....

I've shot many hogs with a 7mm rem mag and have used everything from Sierra handloads, Accubonds, E-Tips, and Barnes TSX's. I've had an Accubond bounce off of a hog's shoulder at 50 yards, and have bounced another off the forehead of a hog at 150 yards. The TSX's have been universally deadly with one shot that killed two hogs inadvertantly. Oops. That said; I've seen hogs that made me want to shoot a bigger gun.

I'm not a big fan of the .308 on hogs. I think that it lacks sufficient energy to really whack the big ones. It's fine for your generic 125 lb. pig, but you get a big boy with a tough gristle plate shooting a Barnes, it's not enough.

Sounds like a made the right decision then. I have shot hogs with my .308 but nothing too nasty. ig-laughing: The recoil was nice on it though. The 7 mm will hit alot harder but it can't be worse than my slug gun. :skeered:

308 should be plenty for any hog. I think your problem is the copper bullet.

Can't wait to see the e-tips pics. I bought a T3 lite in 30-06 'cause my old rifle should wouldn't group with the barnes. My experience with barnes slugs left a bad taste in my mouth for that product. The accuracy with the Tikka and e-tips 150 is mind boggling (3 rds touching) but I have yet to use it on game. Hopefully, next month at the POR I'll be able to post autopsy reports.

I was lucky enough to have hand me down from my father. A 7mm Weatherby mag and i love it besides the fact its hell for me to find the ammo I want at the right price. But i shoot 140 x-bullets and they do great. To bad I don't reload i have about 400 cases of brass for it.

The 308 has more than enought energy for any hog. Bullet placement along with bullet construction makes a difference. About the TSX, many claim excellent results and others less than satisfactory. But any reason to buy another rifle works for me.

I took the new Tikka to burro canyon yesterday to sight it in. Now i wouldn't believe you if you were telling me but out of the box with Fed. 140 gr. tsx, 3/4" groups... AT 200 YARDS!!!:smiley_yahoo: The groups at 100 yds. were one hole. And flat as he!!. The 200 yd shots were 1/4" high from bull and at 100 yds less that an inch high. The 7mm mag. is like a laser! I bought a limbsaver recoil pad and the recoil is not nearly what i was expecting. It hits you hard, but not enough to develop a flinch.:skeered: I love this gun! I'm not normaly a super great shot but this gun makes me feel like a dead eye.
