I need some help in someone referring a guide outfit for a single hunter with no experience. I am proficient with my rifle, however would like the most complete experience(place to camp, skinning, transport to butcher etc...) that I can get. I have seen an ad for Native Hunt down by San Jose,(I live in Vacaville) but I have seen nothing on this outfit and I have read everything. I may seem particular, but this first hunt will set the tone. I have also read about all of the guides that you all have commented on, however I am looking for single hunter this seems to make a difference.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Check with Camp 5 Outfitters in Paso Robles (???). You may also check with Boaring Experiences out of Atascadero. Both of these I've read good things about and have met the owners of both companys and they are personable and experienced hunters.

I believe that Camp Five actually has more acres to hunt on. I am at work as I write this, if you need phone numbers let me know, and I will get those from home tonight.

If you can use a bow, Chopper's is the best place I have ever hunted hogs on. Not only does the ranch hold lots of hogs, but the cabin he puts everyone up in has great views!

Wannabe,

First, welcome to JHO! It's a good place for info, as you've already found out.

I think most of the guides you've read about on JHO are available for a single hunter. Your best bet, of course, is to call and talk to them yourself.

It's been said several times over, but you'd be amazed how great a guided hunt can be if you spend the time talking with the guide or outfitter about what YOU are looking for, and making clear that they will provide YOUR hunt on YOUR terms.

Camp 5, Boaring Experiences, and Mustang Guide services all seem to have a good following among hunters here. I'm sure you could get a reference for any of them simply by posting up the question.

Good luck!

Marty Rovenstein who lives in San Miguel has a good service. Pretty basic, but he'll do the grunt work for you.

When you call up a guide, make sure you let them know what you expect.
Also, ask what what the guide expects out of you as far as conditioning, attitude, etc.

Just b/c you are going solo, doesn't mean he won't have other hunters in camp. So let him know you want a true 1 on 1. It might cost you more, but if that's what you want......

I used to go solo and would meet some nice guys in other groups while hunting.
Good way to find out about some other hunting spots.
I have a place to stay in Utah now b/c I met a guy on a hog trip.

Good luck
