New Mexico Unit 5B

Hi all, though I reside in NM I have never hunted Unit 5B. I ended up buying a cow elk landowner authorization (unit wide) for that area. Any suggestions? (PS there is a wilderness area up there, is it worth hunting?). I am due out there for a scouting trip this next weekend If I find anything I'll post pics/details.

No, the wilderness area is not worth hunting for a cow. Unlike most wilderness areas, the wilderness area you are referring to is amongst the lowest ground in the unit basically and is a hard to get into hell-hole on the north end.

It's my understanding that elk migrate into 5b mesa country for winter and the population goes up by over a factor of 4 with heavy freeze-up/snows. I'm not sure how big of an influx the south end of the unit gets nor the west side of the unit...but, there are mountainous regions that hold elk on those sides of 5b.

You'll want to call NM F&G and they'll steer you right on a cow hunt. I've heard where they go but haven't hunted it that time of the year.

Guys, thanks for the input. I am going to pick up a BLM map this week and head on up this coming weekend to"check the area out". Should be fun. Hell, maybe I'll try to get a cayote while I am at it. I dlike to drive some of the roads to figure out the road network up there (to get around) and then probably I'll do some hiking to look for sign. I'll scratch the wilderness area off the list. Again, thanks for your suggestions.

PS: My hunt if first week of November (weel I have 3 choices but I am taking that and hoping for bad weather)

BTW, does anyone know how one can obtain a Jesse's sticker? (for my truck)
