So one of the only spots I hunt in the area is a bust this year, big surprize right? So I figure I might aswell burn some of that boot leather atleast exploring areas I havnt been to yet. Pulled out the old forestry maps and first place that appealed to me was the Piru Creek area. Well after researching that abit on the net it seems that you cant really access the area I want to go because of private land restrictions, etc. Thought about coming down from fishermans flats but really I hate seeing hikers and tree huggers when I'm trying to go hunting. So I am now wondering if their is any areas up little tujunga canyon worth exploring? I cant find to much about it online, but between private land, L.A. shooting restrictions, and fuggin hippies, I'm really starting to get stressed. I wanna go somewhere new and not to far tomorrow and have no friggen clue where to go.... Anybody got a spot and need a ride and a dog please PM me....

Its tough because any land that is flat is private. A huge area up that way is closed due to forest fire. Seriously though, I would save the gas money. This year is a total bust. Maybe you can try waterfowl or predator hunting instead. I'm not even looking for birds anymore this season.

Limited access is exactly what you want this year. If you have to hike several miles before you even begin to consider really hunting that's where the best numbers will be. I think any place that can be driven to and hunted has already been hunted at this point. The birds have been taken already over the last three years and the remaining holdovers have probably migrated to either private land or public land deep enough to deter most bird hunters. I had a good day earlier this year but all the birds I saw were between 3 and 6 miles in. When you said Fisherman's Flat were you meaning Frenchman's that you get off at Templin to get to?

Last I checked piru creek was angeles national forest from pyramid lake to lake piru. I hiked several miles in once in search of trout. Some very beautiful country, I imagine there could be quail around if you took the time to learn the area. Personally is rather just drive further to a better hunting area.

LOL ya sorry Frenchman's. Walking does not bother me. I've been known to put in 12 miles in a day, just wanna check out some new scenery... If I'm sight seeing with guns and not hunting I would like it to at least be fresh scenery....

Learning where to hunt is half the fun, get some good maps, look for water. National Forest & BLM is good place to start.

I fish frenchman's flat a lot and have done some hiking downstream...I have never seen or heard a quail down stream. Doesn't mean that they aren't there...and the canyon gets really steep. Lots of rock hopping.

I have maps, forestry maps, shooting zone maps, garmin base camp, google earth, and even http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/. I have been burning boot leather for 4 years now trying to find places where u can actually hunt, been yelled at by hippies, had dirt bikers call the police on me for having a gun (National forest land) wasted more gas driving to central cali and surrounding areas only to strike out! So you will have to forgive me if at this point I would rather reach out to an old timer that might wanna share a few spots rather then be buried with them.... I would have like to have been born into this life, but I made my own conscious decision to become a hunter in california in the year 2009 and brother I got to tell ya, it aint ez and I need all the help I can get!!!!

Do you have 4x4? The places I go I see almost no one. When I do they are just hunters or dirt bike riders. Stay away from trails or any other place that you can get to from a subaru. Put the number for cal tip in your phone and report hunter harassment. It is illegal.

I've found Jim Matthews Western Bird Newsletter Helpful. You can also call him and bounce ideas off him (if you are a subscriber).

I've only been hunting for 2 years and have lots of spots now (more than I will ever have time to hunt). Just waiting for a good production year to enjoy.

I have said it a bunch on here. Download the DFW CA quail guide. It will get you into the areas, but boot leather pays off.
Like others have said, get away from the park the car a take a loop spots. These areas get beaten.

Ditto on Mathew's Western Bird newsletter. I learned a lot from the few years I subscribed, and he can also get you the GPS coordinates to all the guzzlers in the Mojave National Preserve, which is my favorite place to hunt for many reasons. I'm also a fan of the DFW CA quail guide, which is excellent. The area info is vague, but gives you an idea of where to start. Game birds need many things to thrive, with water at the top of the list. That's where I start and it almost always pays off.
