New to hog hunting

Hello to all,
I am new to this particular forum, but have been on other topics here. I have never hog hunted. I live in San Diego County. I would appreciate any and all information, recommendations, advice and warnings on getting started; as in the who, what, why, where, how type of help.
I noticed there is hog hunting near the Tejon pass, I think. Is that the one that goes up from Riverside to Victorville, etc.? If so, how do I find out information on where to go and what I need, such as a license, equipment, etc.

dzrtram.....you'll need a california hunting licence and pig tags which are relatively cheap right now.....but will soon go up to $15.75 (or there abouts) a tag in the near future.......hogs on public property are few and far between but they are there......Fort Hunter Ligget and (dare I say it) Camp Roberts are your best bets for public property.....there are also several good guides if you want to spend a little money.......there should be plenty of people here who can point you in the right direction for a guide.....good luck and happy hunting.

I not sure if you had a chance to review it but at the top of the forum Jesse has a pinned topic named Helpful hog hunting links. There is alot of info in those threads that should help answer your questions regarding hunting pigs. Take alook at them, they are in a way more concise format than I could provide you.

Welcome. You are thinking of Cajon pass. Tejon ranch is on the Grapevine on Hwy. 5. Its the closest to you (us) for hog hunting. There are some public spots but the more research you do the more you will find that if you really want a reasonable chance at success you are better off saving a few bucks for a private property hunt. Welcome to the list, and to the hog hunting addiction!

I'd second what Dilprxo recommended. Read through some of the material on the Hog Hunting Links page. Also get a copy of the DFG's Hunting Wild Hogs in CA pamphlet. It's good, basic information.

If you have ever hunted other big game, particularly deer, you already have the basics for hog hunting. The rest comes from learning as much specifically about hogs (habits, sign, etc.) as you can, then getting out in the field to put that knowledge to work.

I strongly recommend looking into guided or private land hunts to start out. Your odds of success are much higher, and you can learn a lot from a quality guide. Scan the threads on this forum for discussion of several CA guides. You'll find a couple of names come up repeatedly.

If you have never hunted big game before, there's a lot to learn. It's not "hard" to learn the basics, but there is a good bit of knowledge to acquire. Wild hogs are a good critter to learn on, though, because there's no season so you can hunt all the time. The more time you spend in the field, the better hunter you'll become.

After scoping out the available resources here and on the DFG site, feel free to pop in with any specific questions. I bet someone here will be able to give some good advice.
