Looks like fun here with lots of good info. I hunt the North Fork area (private) but it is getting to be a hassle with the politics and will probably stay that way till the new foreman is in place and the old one out. The new one I like and can work with so its pretty cool. Anyway, been thinking about trying a few new areas. One is East end of Pine Flat, not to far from here, but they have had so much trespassing, as I here it, over the years that they are warn pretty thin. There are spots of private land dotted all over and I use dogs so don't want to get to close to the private land. Other place I had in mind was the Los Padres. Being National forest I would think there are places where it is not over run with people....even if I have to walk in. I also read down in one of the threads that you need a permit to park in the National Forest....since when and is it needed for the forest or just the wilderness? Appreciate any help. Have some pis at the site below.

Welcome!

I will be hunting Los Padres this weekend, and I will let you know how it goes. Yes, you need an adventure pass to park your vehicle in the forest, and yes, that's stupid.
Welcome aboard.

HICNTRY, first off welcome to JHO.
<

After reading your post I remembered seeing a JHO member that lives in Coarsgold that also uses dogs and thought you may be able to share some information with each other. The members board name is Bayedsolid and he has a post on the first page of the "where do you hunt pigs" section. As for the Pine Flat area you mentioned. The Public land is very limited. First the areas that are Public that contain hogs are typically very small and in my opinion difficult to hunt with dogs due to the size of the area as well as the proximity of ranches that boarder them as you have already stated. The other issue is accessability. While there are pockets of Public land that may show on the map they are also boxed in by private land and require permission of the land owner to cross. I hope this helps and again welcome aboard. Brian

Hey Seacow,

I read one of your earlier post about Los Padres. Thought I'd share my experience. Are you planning on hiking in from Botcher's Gap on the 101 side? There was a fire there a number of years ago (don't remember when) and since it's become very overgrown. Maybe they've done some maintenance but when I was down there the trail was almost non-existent at places and there was a tremendous about of poison oak. The camp was full (on a weekend) but there was nobody on the trail...absolutely nobody. I hiked in I think about 3 miles or so and then my partner crapped out. I would have liked to hike further to explore and don't know what's past the 3 mile mark.

I also did a pack-in hunt a couple of years ago from the FHL side. I can't remember the name of the camp where we parked the car but we ended up hiking into the western side of the ventana wilderness. (I'll check my maps tonight. Send me a pm if you want more info). Fun hike but it was about 100 degrees when we started out. Climbed almost straight up for a couple of miles and then down into a nice valley. Nobody else around. Saw some mountain and valley quail and heard coyotes but didn't see any pig sign. If you're interested in cutting through FHL you can. I hunted FHL extensively this past quail season and specifically asked the gate gaurd on several occassions if we could drive through the base. No problem. Just be sure to have your photo id, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. My understanding is the also have a checkstation now setup on the western side of FLH.

Good luck and let us know how you do.
