I know of a couple good spots between Carmel and Coalinga, but you have to be able to hunt during the week. Let me know if you're interested.

nofear25,
welcome to JHO!
Orso's starting off on the right foot, where ya from.
We've all got some pretty good places to send you and you may want to consider a guide to start out at least on your first hunt.

Either way, it helps to know where you're at so we have a point of reference.
Be ready to write or print info, cuz most hog hunters love to share with each other.
Just please, stay away from the "Put & takes".

They said it, the best idea is to start with a guided hunt because if you only hunt public lands Like I've been doing you'll get burned out and loose motivation very fast. It may cost more in the begining i.e. up to $500 (gas, food, etc.) but public land hunts really add up fast, I've spent over $1000 in gas and such with out any luck just since last Sept. These guys can give you some names of great guides, I'd take there advice if I were you.

Cheers

Hi nofear25,

Until you get set up with a nice place to hunt, you might head 15 minutes south to Sunol and watch the pigs there. Take the Calaveras road to the Calaveras Reservoir and then start looking around. It ain't hunting but it is a way to get familiar with them. You can track them, photograph them, and stalk them. Definitely a rush.

Nofear25,
Most of the good places are central coast like Paso robles, Parkfield/San Miguel, Kings City.

I would start by contacting Bigtusker via email. he's on JHO and could probably
refer you to a reputable guide and ranch to hunt on. Also, if you type the word Parkfield in your search bar, it'll link you to guides, ranches and outfitters in that area. There is a guide I've heard good things about in that area. The company is
Boaring Experiences LLC and I think they're on the web as well.

I strongly reccomend starting out with a guide or at least a very experienced Hog Hunter. It will make all the difference in the world. One more helpful hint, pick a guide who likes to talk a lot and then, buy his dinner and drinks. You'll make a good friend and learn a lot.

Try this guy.

http://www.boaring.com/

He lists prices and details on everything you'll need. He's also a JHO'er and has been helpful in the forum.

Good luck and have a blast.

Hey nofear25, welcome to the site!
Your about the same age as my son Justin, maybe next time I head out to hunt public lands, i'd be more than happy to have you tag along.

If you really can't afford a guided hunt right now, you might want to consider Fort Hunter Ligget or Camp Roberts. As far as public land hunts, that don't cost much, these two spots would probably be your best bet. You can also try the Clear Creek, Laguna Mountain areas. There's a lot of spots off of Coalinga rd you can hunt.

These areas are only a couple hours south of you.

No matter where you go on public land, your going to have it tough finding a hog. Good luck on whatever you decide.

What Mel said.

1. Plan a hunt for FHL or Camp Roberts or some of the other BLM land south of Hollister.

2. Announce your dates on the forum here.

3. Ask for some company.

4. I'm sure you'll get some interested folks. Especially for a FHL or CR hunt.

5. Also, keep an eye out for some JHO get together hunts if you don't organize one first.

I started off with th epublic land hunts first (low funds), then I went to Fort Tejon for a Pig O Rama and seen quite a few hogs on that trip. Seen tons of hogs on Choppers ranch. Now I save for guided hunts. Usually turns out to be about the same cost if I hunt closer to home.

Good Luck. I'll keep an eye out for your invite.

Mel and Bubba got it right. Do what they suggest and with some hard work you can get some opportunities. Definitely keep an eye on the forum and don't be shy to ask to tag along.

If you bowhunt, Bigtusker has a fine piece of property with much game on it. Bigtusker's property is private so there would be a fee to hunt it.
