Newbie looking to learn to hunt

The pig management hunt sounds like a lot of fun. I'll give it a try. In the mean time, based on what you guys have suggested, I would like to hookup with a guide for a weekend hunt. Any guides you would recommend?

Tom Willoughby and also Frank Morasci are two of the rifle pig hunting guides that are of good reputation. Many others are of the same good reputation. I believe among them, Tom Willoughby and Frank Morasci have some of the best reasonable prices around. Tom Willoughby's phone # you can get from Deedy of Bryson Hesperia Resort and Frank Morasci's phone # was in a previous post from some satisfied customer in this month's posts. Or you could use the search function in this website and click on those 2 guide's names. Practice at the shooting range a lot with your high powered hunting rifle so that your shot will connect when these guides bring you within reasonable shooting distance of a wild hog. These guides are safety, safety, safety conscious so they will remind you of safety issues when it needs to be. But they are professionals and will make your day. Good luck and good hunting. Rancho, I think it is 75 per side now that they don't have a Desert side anymore. I could be wrong, but I know there were 75 hunters on the South side last POR I went to.

The regular PORs do allow up to 75 hunters per side now, but the JHO hunt is still limited to 50.

Last couple of years, we were told we could hunt over on the desert side if we wanted to, but as far as I know no one took the opportunity. There are hogs there, though... just have to know where to look.

I have a deal at my resort you might like. I do a little pre-hunt tour to show fresh pig sign and put you into some areas have some fresh activity, this is semi guided. No guarantees but I think everybody has a good time and we can help you get started in this very (caution) addicting sport. You can read about it in the "Bachelor Hog Down" thread I posted on 2-25-07. If you desire a full guided pig hunt Tom Willoughby is one of the best in my opinion, 98% guarantee, 25 years in business and 120,000 acres of some really good looking Russian Hogs. He's on my website at brysonresort.com, you can get his info there. Next JHO Event at the Resort is scheduled for April 6-8, there's another thread on that too. But we hunt here all the time, hunters coming every week/weekend here- many are JHO'ers. Good luck with this - you'll have a blast I'm sure. Pig hunting is the best! Right guys?

I've been following this post regarding "new to the hunt' I also am a newbie. There's a lot of information on gun safety, reading books on pig hunting in Ca., learning to track and such. However, the bottom line for is once this all plays out, what about dressing, and preparing the hog. It's one thing to score, yet another for when you do. I also thought maybe learning from a guide but I am getting the gist that, that may not happen. Am I putting too much emphasis on the hog preparation.
So far, that's been my real concern about going out alone. Are there classes or a means to learn this before going out.

Orion, DFG host a couple Wild Pig Hunting Clinics during the year and you should look into them. Here's their pig guide with a little more info.
