DALLAS, Ore. (AP) -- The Polk County sheriff's office says a hunter accidentally shot and killed his friend after mistaking him for an elk in heavy vegetation in a rugged area of the Coast Range west of Falls City.
Deputies, assisted by county, Corvallis and Salem search and rescue experts, removed the body Sunday of the 32-year-old Newport man, Felipe Amado Fernandez Galicia. He was killed Saturday about a mile-and-a-half from the nearest road. The shooter is a 24-year-old co-worker of the victim from Albany. The sheriff's office says Fernandez Galicia was driving a bull elk ahead of him when his friend mistook him for the elk and fired. Fernandez Galicia was hit in the back and died at the scene. He was wearing light-colored clothes and no orange.

I hunted that area several times a year during early and late bow seasons. Lots of elk on mostly timber company land with BLM and USFS mixed in. Lots of logging roads. Much of the terrain is fairly gentle. But is thick, rain forest thick on lots of places. General bull out there is mayhem most years. People and rigs everywhere. Elk running around through the trees.

Yet another case for positive target ID before firing. we're on 4 or 5 this shootings year. One during ducks season.

The same thing happened in Oregon a couple weeks ago when a hunter mistaken shot another hunter thinking he was a bear creeping through the woods.
