At first I thought of these as a pricy toy.  But the more I research a night vision device would be a great tool.  One for fishing on the great lakes adn another for silent no flashlight walks to my stand in the early mornings.

I'm leaning for the goggles for the handfree realtime 1:1 view.  Any arguments for a monocular.
Yout thoughts /reviews would be appreciated.

The night vision gogles work great with the monocular, as long as you are not driving. You have limited depth perception with the monocular types, so for driving or flying the military uses binocular NVD's.

I have used the PVS-7b monocular model on military excersices and they work great. We did'nt look throught them the whole time while walking, just when the terrain was too dark to see.

I've got a 1st gen monocular, I don't use it too much for walking but it is nice to use for scouting or if you want to look at something that is too dark. Sometimes I like to lower my bow down and sit on my stand awhile and use it to just watch and see where everything is coming from and going to. one night I watched a big boy come grunting in and run off  the competition.

They are battery powered, so a binocular will eat more batteries than a monocular.

I have used those $200 bass pro monocular, I think second gen. (at the bass pro catalog return center they can be had for half price).

It works really well I though, but even with 3.1 magnification I was left wanting more, like 8-10 power!  Oh well, for the price they were fun to play with. I think in MO the regs now say we can't have them on us for hunting, but I think its a gray line if your using them to get to your stand, I don't know.

Anyway, the more you spend the happier you will probably be.

I am currently testing a new generation 3 model and wow!
Total darkness is clear as day. I got them because i live in
the country and sometimes at night my dog will bark constantly
and so now i can see what the hell she is yapping at (deer mostly)
but there are a bunch of yotes out there as well, (Yes i'm gonna shoot them)
The pair i'm useing is the $2,000 specs, How do i get to test them you ask?
I work for Cabelas

Don't know where you hunt but I would be VERY CAREFUL about walking in the woods in total darkness. You just don't know who might be out there and if they are the type to shoot at sounds. Whould not be the first time this has happened. I myself use a light no matter what. It is really hard to mistake a guy for an animal when you are carrying a light.
