I think this camera would make a great starter camera. It gets good reviews and a A- rating at Digital Cameras HQ. The main thing to think of is what brand you want to use. I say that because you may eventually buy more lens. The lens are really what makes the shot...the better the lens....the better the photo. Nikon is a great brand. I chose Canon but easily could have gone with Nikon (or Olympus or Pentax etc...) I'm still learning and love to get out in the field with my camera. I most always have one with me, even at work. Enjoy!
not sure what the price diff is but I recently bought the Canon 60D at Costco and am really happy with it.. The 18-200mm lens that comes with the Canon is $600 lens by itself.. I also find this lens just about the perfect all-around lens.. Wide enough angle to shoot indoors in tight spaces and has enough zoom to really reach out.
My prior camera was a Nikon D50 and I wore it out. It too had the two lenses like the Nikno 5100 kit you are looking at however I found myself always wanting to switch lenses.. also the lenes were very low quality compared to what I got with the Cannon.
Hope this helps.. It's a big investment and I'm sure you will be happy with either especially if you have never owned a DSLR.
I'm a Canon guy. My first camera I bought was a Canon Rebel EOS in 2004. I have shot with that camera up until last week. Have around 20,000 shots taken from it. I just picked up a Canon Rebel T3i body and used it yesterday for the first time. I can already see I am going to love this camera. Look around the Internet for good deals. Amazon.com has lots of great deals, also Craigslist. Get a camera that you won't grow out of too fast. Also, look for used and refurbished lenses. Once you get into the hobby, it becomes a sickness and you'll keep adding toys to your camera bag.
