Anyone out there had any experience with the Nikon 80-400MM f/4.5-5.6D ED VR Zoom lens? Just bought a Nikon D50 and looking for a long lense to photo wildlife.

I use a Nikon D70 - I have not used that lens, but like the reviews. I read Ken Rockwell's web site before I buy any camera stuff. He said that lens is a great "walking around" lens but did not take well to using a teleconverter. If you just need a very long lens, you can get a 300mm prime and a 2x teleconverter for a lot less money.

jej,

Thanks for the info, I bit the bullet and went ahead and bought the 80-400VR, pretty pumped about playing around with it....

I like my 80-400 on my d-70. For really great pics carry a good tripod with you.
This is equivelent to a 125-600 and camera shake is rather bad for detail shots. My next lens is a fixed 1500. Can I borrow some money from you?

Also in the process of purchasing a d-200 for my studio.

Did I ask if I can borrow some money?

copilot,

Do you turn the VR off when you shoot off the tripod? I have been told that if you try and use the VR on a tripod it messes up the focus, a monopod is OK with the VR on but not a tripod.....any truth to that??

Sounds like with what you have on your plate you are going to need to borrow some money....LOL

I usually use the vr with my 35 mil. It works differant with digital for some reason.
When on a tripod I'll try to shoot with and without pending on time because I bracket a lot of my pics.

If you were close to my area we would go play with the 6 lenses I have already.
