Trucker facing charges in skunk killing.

By Associated Press,

3/26/2002

SOMERVILLE, N.J. (AP) A truck driver who allegedly used a shovel to beat a skunk to death last year will now face animal cruelty charges.

Reid Kicia, 25, of Somerville, was also charged Monday with killing an animal on state property. The skunk was found Sept. 15 at the Wallace House, which George Washington used as his headquarters in 1779.

Kicia will stand trial on all charges next week in municipal court. He could face up to six months in jail if convicted on the animal cruelty charges, but it was not immediately known what sentence he could face on the state charge.

Authorities said Kicia was among a group of men who allegedly threw a firecracker at the animal. A witness later saw Kicia repeatedly strike the skunk with the shovel.

Kicia, though, said he threw a log at the skunk when it came into his garage. Seeing that it was injured, Kicia said he followed the skunk to the Wallace House which is next door to his home and struck the animal to put it out of its misery.
