I checked out the drawing page for premium tags in UT. Seems like very low odds for a non-resident to draw. Why is this??? Becasue the residents have the majority of points saved?
I believe that Utah allots 10% or 15% of the total tags for non-residents, so we are not competing for the same group of tags. I think the reason for the poor drawing odds is, first - there is some fine bulls in Utah and second - Utah has for many years has allowed getting in the draw with just a $5 application fee charged to your credit card and you pay for a tag only if you get drawn. When this years fees for bull elk jumped from $460 (somewhere around that) to $760 (again something like that) I figured that would drop some of the competition, but I was wrong. There were still 658 non-residents appying for 3 tags in the zone I draw for. I got 8 points now, maybe with a little luck I'll finally get that bull tag in the next few years.
LE Bull tags went up to 795$.....and include a fishing license now too... along with the odds... mine went up from 80:1 average odds for the area I want to 110:1 average for the early hunt. With the splitting of the hunt to early and late the odds went up dramatically....As for premium tags and all others... non-residents have always been allowed "x" of all tags that the residents can't apply for until after the draw. Then its a free for all for any of the remaining tags.... for both residents and non.
