It's pretty spotty around there. Most of the hogs are on private land. I was in Chico for 5 years, as a student, and did a fair amount of hunting around Red Bluff. There were hogs there, but barely. Best bet is to get in favor with some ranch families.

In another thread here, I learned that "Just for Hunting" that sponsors this forum is in that area although I'm sure they hunt private land. Here is the post from them.

"Hunts are out of Redding or Red Bluff..All transportation to, from and on the ranch is on us. No lodging or main meals. snacks and drinks are generally offered throughout the day. All animal care is done by us to skinning and quartering if needed.
2 days $700 per hunter. If you arrive early we more often than not will hunt Friday evening or even stay over until Monday if need be. We strive for success and gun hunts run well above 90%"

Hello Brantly04,

I used to hog hunt south of you near Yuba City at Spenceville WA, but it will close tomorrow Jan 31st. Attached is a Google Earth screen save of my (KLM) file showing the the California Protected Easements near Chico. (protected from private ownership) They include everything from city parks to BLM, so you will have to check them out before hunting. I doubt is bidwell state park is open to hog hunting, but it's worth checking. If you have Google Earth loaded I can attach my (KLM) file on my return email.

I don't know about hunting in Bidwell-Sacramento State Park. I know for a fact that there is NO hunting in Bidwell municipal park. There is hunting available in the Big Chico Creek Ecological Preserve for turkey, deer and qail permitted by a lottery draw. I've never heard of, or seen any sign of pigs up Big Chico Creek. As for the Bidwell-Sacramento State park, I know there are pigs around that area, just not sure if you are able to hunt there.

Sorry guys there is very little help for public ground hog hunting...just the way it is. I have hunted the North State my entire life shot my first hog up here in 1980...yep on private ground even back then. During those 31 years I have shot one hog on public ground and that big ol boar ran off with a .44 mag round right in the side..never did find him.

There are a few public spots or government run public draw or first come places that you will find occassional success if you do lots of homework and are persistent as well as lucky.

Most of the public areas are pretty well populated with hunters..You may find a landowner of some private ground that has not figured out the value of wld pigs??...pretty unlikely.

Wish I could give you all a better DIY opportunity, but with all the dang liability nowadays you won't even find any self guided hunts on private ground.

My best suggestion is save you gas money from the trips you would have taken and put it in a can until you have enough for a guided hunt. If you shop hard you can find a hunt for under $500 bucks. Don't ask me how they do it for that cheap?

Make sure you check out however you go with..check refrences and ask questions..truly hogs on private ground should be 80% or better. And whatever you do don't be tempted to help yourself to private ground hogs..you might just be watching yourself on Wild Justice...lol

If you all have quetions about hunting pigs on public ground any of the DFG biologists can tell you where pig are located on public ground or shoot me a PM or email hunter@justforhunting.com and I will help the best I can.

CICC is a guide service out of Chico that hunts on private land. Not sure their price though. I also heard there's some hogs out by the Buttes, but again, mostly private. You can also go out by Lake County -- plenty of hogs out that way. I don't have any public land research to share as most of my hog hunts are done on private property.
