Unfortunately with my work schedule and some other travels, my opportunities to hunt are limited to late season (around November 7th). I am looking at the Idaho Middlefork B tag which has a late season, but some have warned about the wolves.

I believe there are also OTC tags in Oregon, Washington and Colorado. Any recommendations would be appreciated. It would be great to join a group or would even consider a guide. I don't have a $10k hunting budget (or even close) so some guided trips are out for me.

Thanks in advance
Mike

I can't really help much, but can give last years experience. We hunted an OTC elk hunt in WA state using a guide. We were guaranteed a shot op.
None of the 6 of us even got a shot. They are honoring thier word and we are going back this year on them, but not very great hunting. Also, the hunting thier is mostly road hunting with very little hiking. I personally would choose somewhere else. Good luck.

thanks and hope you do better this year

I like that your guide was good about giving you a free hunt since he did not get you on some animals. Hopefully you at least had fun with your buddies and do well this year. Two bad hunts would be rough. Getting time in the forest is hard to come by.

I have hunted that time period many times in CO, but havent for 4 yrs now. Great time of yr, typically in that time of yr, the elk are running down hill and in a hurry. In other words, are really moving to migrate and get out of the high elevations to their winter ranges. Granted weather usually plays a huge roll and this is the beginning of the migration perhaps, but we had great hunts that time of yr. We always hunted the south west portions of CO, east of Durango and/or northeast of you could. This is what we did, you do what ever you want to other people persuade you to do more.

I was trying to convince my dad and his buddies to come on a OTC elk hunt to OR this yr but it is probably not going to work out. Out of the two, CO and OR, OR has the cheaper tag and its spike bull or better (better opportunity to fill your tag on a DIY public land hunt than CO). I believe in CO, it is a 4 pt. bull or better one one side, OR a brow tine longer that 5 inches. CO, tags are a little more pricey but I love that country and have had great success. When I was talking to a guy up from OR I asked him if he would be willing to give me some ideas to hunt, in the OTC areas and he gave me a couple which I could share with you, once you make a decision. Good luck, in deciding, anywhere you go will be great and sure beats the heck out of being at work.
