Well, here's the chance for someone (or someones) to help an old Washington elk hunter. I have always put my effort into hunting bull elk during the rut. And in some cases hunting during the late season in the high country snow. But I have yet to hunt in the mid-late season for cows. (Let alone in the state of Arizona) I drew a muzzleloader tag for unit 6A this year. I went up there last week-end to start my scouting, had a fun time blowing my calls with the bulls, but got to thinking ( like my wife says, "why start now") - Why scout the area out if I'm not even sure the cows will be in the area in November?
So here is my question... How would you suggest that I - with very limited scouting time available - scout out Unit 6A that is an unfamiliar area to me. I think I remember seeing that there is a buck season ending about two weeks prior to the cow season in this area also. And this in itself brings up another question.... will this push the cows away from where ever I find them during my scouting trips, making my scouting a waste of time?
I know the next logical question from this type of post would be "and what tree do I find one tied up to" - but that's not where I'm going with this, or I would just hire a guide. I enjoy the work leading up to the hunt - I just would like a kick start. Here's best wishes to you all to have great hunts.
