The money shots are pending my Uncle's return from elk camp tonight. My son and I arrived at camp on Wed. around 3:30 and set up the trailer and hunting gear in anticipation of the opening morning hunt. There was one other camp that we noticed on the way in. My Uncle and Aunt had already set up a couple of hours before I arrived.
My son and I woke around 4:30 and got the quads ready and left camp for the spot I had seen elk the week before. We got a really cold snap with a 30 degree swing so everything had changed. We didn't see any elk at first light and dummy me set down my cammoflauge range finder and lost it. Next time I will buy a bright orange one.:smiley_doh: Luckily I had brought a back up even though I never used it. I glassed five elk up high and decided to go after them. After realizing there was no way to cut them off I just followed to put myself into a better area. In no time I had a 5x6 bull answering my calls. He arrived like a freight train running straight at me and coming within 20yds before moving back down the valley. I called him back two more times trying to luere one of the other bueggling bulls in that might have a cow. The third time he got a little too close finally zeroing in so I stood up to move him off when I noticed I had been stalked by a coyote only 20 or so feet off to my left. He spun when I stood and took off. Man was that exciting. Just about then the other bull came over and he had a cow but they were moving so quick through the trees that I couldn't get a shot. I began chace trying to beat them to the next ridge and once again found them just going over. I hit the cow/calf call and stopped him and her but she only presented her backside when she turned her head to look and the bull was on the same side she turned to so no shot again. After playing with all the bulls I decided to back out and make a evening hunt out of it.
Later that evening I set up in the same area and my son Lane glassed up a cow feeding bellow so we took off down the mountain. We we got there it was so dense that you couldn't see anything but elk sign everywhere and bulls bueggling. We hear something run off sounding like a quarter horse in a race when I hit the call. Another bull responded and came in to us. He ended up less than 20 feet to my left just on the other side of the Juniper we were hiding against. After trying to get some video of him he busted me moving and ran off. We then decided to go high again and on the way back we jumped a lone cow. I shot and my son said I missed so I ran up and let a second one fly from the 300 SAUM and down she went. A third shot finished her off and the work began. We field dressed her and winched her up onto one of the quads and litterally had to ride her back to camp. My uncle's friend from Reno tagged out too along with the other camp from Phallen. We had a tuff retrieval yesterday morning on one since a winter storm blew in lots of snow over night and all day yesterday.
We had the time of our lifes playing cat and mouse with those elk. Rifle deer season opened today for my son so that will be next along with my wifes late season area 7 deer tag then my sons turn again on his first elk late season.
My wife and I finished butchering the elk late last night, vaccuum packing/labeling her and puting her in the freezer. Man what a job. The freezer is getting full boys.:)

I had some problems resizing so they might be too small, sorry guys. Here are the money shots. The one is with my son, aunt, and me. The others are just some of the elk I saw while out. One is a nice 7x8.

Superduty,

Great recap of hunt and photos. Good luck to your wife and son on their late season hunts.

My wife has a cow tag also for the area NE of Wells (Units 76,77,79). Is this the unit you were hunting, or were you in Unit 81? We got up to Wells on Wed. too (stayed in town). Didn't see any elk on opening day, then finally located the elk Friday they were lower down than we had expected because not that much snow had fallen priot to the opener. Encountered a a small herd of cows and raghorns at 200 yds while toodling up a two-track road in a new area, but wife could not get off a clean shot before they disappeared over the ridge. Got back on them Sat. morning and afternoon, but they were way up high on a mountain and my wife said no way am i walking up there! They had a nice 6-pt bull with them this time that we had not seen before. He looked awesome sky-lined on the top of the mountain. We hunted for a few hours Sunday morning but with snow and low clouds visibility was pretty poor, and we had to get back to Reno for work on Monday. Plan on heading back up to try to fill the cow elk tag and the two doe tags we have in Area 10. Like you, we had a blast chasing elk in NE Nevada! This our first elk hunting in Nevada, and my wife's first elk hunt. We're hoping to get that freezer filled too!!

You must have a walkin freezer with all the fish and other game.

Good luck with the rest of the tags!

Thanks everyone for the nice responses.
MJB, no but I did have to visit the little Sears store in Elko to purchase another freezer. I told the wife that if we weren't using it that we could always unplug the thing.
Bull Fries, Your wife should do fine harvesting her first elk. Email me and I will help you find the right spot. I would be happy to help you guys anyway I can.

Heckuva story Dave...you may have missed yer' callin' Son, mebbe ya' coulda been a "Field Sports" writer? :) The pics were OK too...Jen and Lane'll help ya' fill that freezer later on this year I'm sure! I'm gonna get yer' Dad out after some of them quail here in a coupla' weeks and see if he can "Clean" the oil outta that there new gun he's itchin' ta' shoot! We'll keep ya' updated Hoss'. I'm taken my Son and one of his good friends up to northern Utah in late Jan. for a Cow Elk hunt, and the fella that's arrangin' the whole foray says the prospects look REAL good, so if we all tag-out, I may be in the market for another freezer myself? :) Tanya'd jest LOVE that....got so much stuff in the garage NOW, don't rightly know where I'd put it? But meat's meat, right....and ya' gotta place yer' priorities accordingly....guess we'd jest have ta' put her SUV out on the driveway? (Yeah, right, we all know that ain't a gonna happen) :) Take care Ol' buddy and congrats on a successful hunt.
