I'm just curious if anyone else put in the the Spike Bull hunt #351 at Grizzly Island this year. This is my second year putting in for it and last year only 31 people applied so I'm hoping it had the same odds or close to that this year.

So far I know of myself and my friend who put it for the tag. Anyone else buy one or know anyone who bought one this year?

Thanks. And good luck.

I put it for the 5th season spike at grizzly, don't have the number on me but 351sounds right. I did same as you, seen 30 people put it for it, 1 person with Max points so 1 random left for 29 people. I figured that would give me the best chance. Ill keep doing this in till I have Max points and then I put in for bull. They also added 1 more season for spike to grizzly so hopefully 351 will have even less people. Probably the best chance to draw an elk tag is 1 of those spikes at grizzly. I just want the meat for now and I'll worry about antlers when I have Max points.

Only problem if you draw this year for the spike bull you will never have maximum points.

why do you say this? Is there a rule i dont know about where as i draw an elk tag and then cant put in for elk in california any more? Im 31 with only 2 points in elk. i figured if i draw a random in next couple years and on something like 351 with low applicants, then great worth the points and i go back the following year and start my points all over? thinking about trying that intill i have 5 or 6 points for elk and then just going after the premium. At same time i may never draw an elk tag in California so why not go for whats possible and that being a low applicant draw like this one.

I was hopeing people would put in for the 434 hunt being a new spike hunt with 4 tags and drop the 351 applicants even lower. Grizzly island has slowly been increasing tags, theres 11 more tags available this year. Total of 52. Thats a great sign.

Again, if you use points this year you will never have the maximum points ever...By the time you are 40 years old the maximum points will be 21..

I just want the meat for now and I'll worry about antlers when I have Max points.[/QUOTE] unfortunately unless you've been putting in since the beginning you will never have max points because there is no cap on points, I missed one year and am 1 point shy of max, I think max is 12 or 13 right now, and the best bet is to put in for a hunt with, like you said, only a few max point apps, my gf is in the same boat 3 points, so we both have roughly the same odds, cow or spike hunts seem to be the best odds, that being said I put in for a bull with minimum tags, 1 pref 1 random in hopes she draws a cow and then I would choose a hunt next year based upon odds, best of luck.

Sorry missed informed on my part, I thought maximum you could get was 11. Didn't realise it went up 1 point every year. New to the points system and when I looked it up 2 yes ago I missed the part that says Max goes up 1 point every year. That makes sense on why I thought it was 11 and here it is 13.Well that puts a damper in the system. So that means I will never have Max points. I guess I'm gonna have to get lucky.

The points system in California is worthless for elk, sheep, antelope and some deer hunts.
Let's look at the Grizzly Island Period4 Bull hunt. In 2014 there were 2 tags, one for the points pool and one for the random pool.
For the one Points Pool tag, there were 1,795 applications for that tag. Of those 1,795 tag applications, 442 applications had Max. Points. So, without a massive increase in the number of tags, it will take 442 years to go through those max. point holders. Thus you can see this point system is no good. We don't have enough tags available to justify it.

I hate this system, I like Nevada's system, pure bonus points plus they square them. They also go through all your choices not just your first. Still gives a guy with zero points a chance and really increases the odds of people that have applied for years.

This states point system, that states point system... the bottom line is that there is nothing wrong with our point system; the problem is the population of our herds are simply much to low to allow a reasonable number of applicants the opportunity to hunt. The reason other states appear to have more hunt opportunities than Ca, is simply that their herd populations can easily support it, the hunter population of those states is not anywhere close to California's, and as such, out of staters have reasonable odds of getting drawn in many zones. I think Mass-n-Trash said it "habitat, habitat, habitat". I am not sure how many of any big game species we lose each year to predation, but we lose many more deer to vehicular accidents than those harvested by hunters. Sure predator control/management would help, but I'd bet if the state aggressively built wildlife underpasses throughout the state, our herds population would be visibly much healthier in a few short years.

But hey, with what the F&W commission appears to be up to, in a few years, we're going to be lucky if we can still hunt.

I agree to a point with you. The this state vs that states draw systems is a partially pointless argument. When you're looking at hunts with 100+ tags which system is better is really a difference in opinion and preference. When you have this many tags it just becomes a waiting game and you have to ask your self how long you're willing to wait. And when you're looking at 20-99 tags California's system really starts to loose ground. When you look at hunts with 20 or less tags California's system clearly becomes the worst around. If you didn't get in on the bottom floor or you missed a year you are automatically excluded from 50-90% of the tags until they rotate through. It could take 40-60+ (assuming that you started applying when you were 16 and hunted/lived until 76) years for those tags to rotate through to the next lowest category. It is clearly a broken system when you look at these limited entry hunts (sheep/elk/antelope).
