I put my wife in for 314 cow elk tag for California. If im reading it right, seems her chances are 1 in 16 or so? Does that seem right? Be cook if she drew it. She has 1 point and I dont think anyone with max points will put in for this hunt..

Looks like last year there were 16 people that put in for that hunt which has 2 tags avalible. So the first tag goes to the highest point holder which last year for that hunt was 7. Then the 2nd tag goes to the random draw between the remaing 15 people. So Last year she would of had a 1 in 15 chance, which is pretty good here in california, but every year is different and maybe other people saw the same thing you did and this year 50 people put in for it?? You never really know. Its alway hard for me to decide what hunt to put in for each year... this year I have 4 points but really I might as well have 0 cause they really dont do anything unless you have max or max -1. well Good Luck with the draw!

That's pretty close to correct. All depends how many put in. I asked my wife if she wanted to put in for a cow tag and she said absolutely not. She want's a nice Tule Elk from the area around our cabin. She should draw in about 15 years.

Is there just one draw round for highest points and then it goes to random? My wife also told me she only wanted a bull or nothing. I showed her the odds for drawing a bull tag and convinced her. Be a nice little vacation if she draws.

Ahhem, that draw will probably be more like a 1 in 17 this year including myself... Good luck.

Actually, most of the tags go to the high points. I think it's 10% go to the random drawing or so. That means if there are 1-9 tags, then only one will go to the random draw, the rest to the points. 20 tags would have 2 random tags available, and so on. Maybe it's 20%, not sure, but that's basically how it happens.
