I’m off tomorrow for NM for my first archery elk hunt. I took out the “Dinosaur” and have I been shooting it a lot. It my dad’s old Golden Eagle. It’s pretty old (I think it was one of the first recurve limb compound bow designs). I added a new sight, whisker biscuit, Beman arrows and Shuttle T lock broadheads. Everyone else in the family is a serious bowhunter and I’m going to see what it’s all about. I have bowhunted before (really I was just scouting with the Dinosaur on my backpack) but never arrowed anything bigger than a squirrel.

It looks like it has been raining there off and on for 3 months straight. I’m hoping the rut is on because sitting over a waterhole might be a waste of time if everything is wet. Any suggestions hunting elk in the mud? Anyone been to the Gila National Forest lately?

I haven't been in the gila but my brother lives in Silver city (just south of the Gila) and said that they got 4" of rain the other day. He said it's the greenest he's ever seen it. Is 21A in the Black Range east of Silver city? If so that is some beautiful country, but rugged as all get out. Best of luck I hope the dinosaur brings down a big one!

BP, The day before I started my New Mexico archery antelope hunt they had less than one inch of rain in the last five months. Hunting over water was going to be a slam dunk. That night it rained several inches and rained everyday during the five day season. Got lucky and managed to arrow a decent buck but that's another story. To my knowledge the rain in most of the state hasn't slowed down much. Forget about hunting solely near a wallow unless you are sure they are hitting it on a regular basis. Hope for bugling elk as there is really nothing like archery elk hunting during the rut. Good luck to you. I sure wish I had a NM archery elk tag!

I'm jealous...hunted pretty close to there and know you'll likely have a fantastic hunt!! A friend drew next door and he'll be down there for the second season too this year.

Good luck on your bow hunt. As for dino? Try my 65lb Pearson straight bow.Haven't used it in 20yrs. And it has been raining in NM all summer, grass 2ft high at 10k. I don't think h2o will be a problem this year in NM. I haven't hunted down there in the Gila but I hear it's great. I'm off to the Pecos Wilderness for MB 2nd Rifle in Oct.

I'm jealous too!!! Good luck on your awesome hunt! You'll have a blast. Try not to call. Sneak in and whack one. Maybe some locater bugles to see if there's anything in the area. But, if they're fired up and fighting and carrying on, sneak in. Woo hoo!!!
