From the Billings Gazette:
Officials investigate killing of 13 elk
Associated Press
JACKSON (AP) - State game wardens are investigating the illegal killing of more than a dozen elk near here and are hoping other hunters can help find those responsible.
Mark Anderson, a warden with the state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, said the 13 elk, including at least one calf, were slaughtered in a field on private property, their bodies gutted, but none tagged. Anderson said he believes that other animals also were wounded and may have since died of their injuries.
"This had very little to do with hunting," Anderson said. "This wasn't anything like a hunt. It was more like a shoot."
Anderson said he is hoping other hunters know who is responsible and will step forward. Authorities have little information to go on, other than some clothes that were left behind when the perpetrators fled.
"I need some help," Anderson said. "People who do things like this need to be dealt with."
The shootings occurred on the morning of Oct. 27, the opening day of general hunting season, on the Martin Jackson ranch west of Dillon.
Jackson's ranch wasn't open to hunting to the general public. Anderson said it appears the perpetrators were on an adjoining ranch when they spotted the herd of elk in an open field.
He said evidence suggests that five people were involved and that they beat a hasty retreat.
The illegal hunters left behind articles of clothing, including an extra-large plaid flannel shirt and a large blue pullover hooded sweatshirt with the words '2002 Montana State Wrestling Championship, Billings, Montana,' across the front. Also left behind was a maroon hooded pullover sweatshirt.
"There are people out there who know what happened and who did it," Anderson said. "If we want to be able to continue to have this privilege to hunt, we can't have these kinds of things continuing to happen."
