OK, I live in Cal

I understand 90% of the pigs are taken on private land. I live in the Bay Area and I'm a blue colar worker, broke butt. I have a little motor home, have my own equipment and don't need food or lodging, only a place to park. Where can I go to hunt for a hunt with my son (28) where I can get a reasonable chance at a pig. A guide would be nice since I'm not an experenced pig hunter but ...
So where should I start and where do I go. Are there reasonable guides out there and or ranches I can pay to self guide hunt?

Now.........on public land.............you have to find public land with a lake inside the boundary.......Lake Sonoma(archery only), San Luis Reservoir(I am guessing here....), Camp Roberts, Fort Hunter Liggett, etc. Keep reading the previous posts here on JHO regarding success on public land hunting and you will get the idea that water year round availability is the key to hog permanent presence on public land.

I second the suggestion to try Bryson Hesperia.

This time of year, water is not an issue. The hogs are transitioning to new grass now, and will even more so when the mustard greens take off.

Fort Hunter Ligget is perfect for someone with a setup such as yours. Bryson is great from what I have read and heard as well. General public land such as National Forests and BLM areas are very, very difficult to get pigs on. Not impossible, but you really have to put in your time, boot leather and pattern those hogs. Remember the number one rule of pigs:

Here today, gone tomorrow. Sometimes, at certain times of the year, they can be predictable though. Good luck!!

Id suggest you do a little of all the above. Mabye over a long weekend hit some of that blm, fort hunter liggett and bryson at the end. Most of what would be considered the better of the blm land is within an hour or so of the fort and bryson. BLM land this time of the year is at its most productive, there is water on all of it and the hogs are moving off private land. Like somone said above in regards to patterning the hogs. Seem practly impossible if your gona hit a spot in just one weekend. Might as well sample numerous spots within a 50 mile area over a 3-4 day weekend and figure out the spots you would want to come back to and mabye get a shot off in the process.

My friends hunt Ft. Hunter Liggett. Heard it's "good" but no luck.
I have a book in my library that says Los Padres near Big Sur is good. and FREE!!
I have hunted Pigs in Los Padres (southern portion) near Bakersfield, and no luck.
BUT we have had good rain this year so I might go back up.
ANYWHERE you go that isn't a military base BE CAREFULL. lots on mexican cartell stuff goin on. Prepare for war, but pray for pigs.......good luck...
