Wanted to see what a behind the ear shot with my .223 would do, and I happened to find one already missing an ear! Dropped in its tracks by the way.

Great way to save meat too.

I'm thinking about using my .223 for hogs. Would you only do head shots with .223? I have a 30.06 but .223 lead free ammo is cheaper. What say you all?

How many do you plan on shooting to where the difference in cost is going to be a legitimate factor? I would shoot them in the heart/ lungs with the .223, but I shoot a sturdy lead bullet. Use your '06. The minimal difference in cost will be well worth the added confidence and insurance. I just brought the .223 out this time because I knew I would get one and I've wanted to put a head shot on a pig with it for a while, just never decided to try til now as I have worked up a nice load and done a number or accurizing work to the rifle. IF I decided to shoot lead free .223 at a hog, I would go for heart/ lungs before a head/ neck shot. You need max expansion and trauma for head placement rather than just a hole through the bone.

Yeah I probably should use the 30.06. I'm going for Javelina in AZ and plan on using .223 for that. I guess it's all about shot placement and shots less than 150 yds.

I plugged one with a .243 right above the eye as he was quartering towards me and down in elevation. Not quite DRT, but he only ran 20 feet.
Nice hog though, and you can't beat a solid brainer.

Not an easy shot when the blood is pumping through you at hog fever speeds! Nice.

For javelina I recommend taking a back-up sleeping bag. ROTF!

Nice shot, that thing looks great dressed out. No lost meat there.
