I was bored its almost 4 am... I'm really starting to miss Camp Roberts... Thought I'd share this photo of a big sow i got a few years back out of Area 5 in CR... I just can't wait until they open it again..... I bet there are pigs all over the base now... I remember one time I was sitting in Area 5 looking at the barley field in the private property that borders area 5... All of a sudden i started to see pigs all over the barley field and a white pickup truck making its way closer to the pigs... A guy comes out his window and starts shooting with a fully automatic weapon... He ends up dropping about 5-10 pigs and just left em there... It just sucks !!! Pisses me off that some people think they can just do whatever they like... But if they see you bend the rules a bit, they would be the first to call a game warden... I really like hunting and I respect sportsmanship but stuff like that really ticks me off... Camp Roberts Pig.jpg

When you deal with farmers, you are probably dealing with a depredation permit (my guess only) when you have a depredation permit it changes from hunting to pest control and that's how those guys see it. I know a couple of people with these permits, and when they use them they don't want the extra work only to protect their crop. If I were you, I'd try to get in with that farmer and see if they'll let you "help" with their problem. I hate it when meat is wasted, but these guys don't see it that way.

I miss camp bob as well. IF it ever opens again to hunting, it should be over run with hogs.

As is typical with government, when they close something be it a gate or a military base, it stays closed. Drives me nuts.

man... i want to b buddys with that farmer. There used to b lots of ppl like that here in cali. The farmers just want to save the farm and the pigs are making it hard for them. I am always on the look out for old farmers i used to know or new ones that want help. If u are a good guy and they can trust you. Many farmers may still let you go hunt the land they farm. You have to follow all of the rules they owner gives you and may also help if u sign sumthing that says u will pay for anything u mess up and also that u want sue if u get hurt or something gose bad. i never thought of it till today but i bet the reason all the farmers are not wanting more ppl on there land is cuz sum jackass messed up. Seems that it only takes a few bad fokes to make it harder for all us good outdoorsmen. good luck to everyone

Bout nails it. Especially here on the Central Coast, lots of ranches I got to hunt in the past have now changed from dry farming (oats, barley and safflowers) to wine grapes. They have high fences, lots of migrant employees and allow no hunting at all. Most do not let anyone onto their land for liability reasons, either for law suit reasons or fear of damage to their grape crop or infrastructure. Many still complain about the damage pigs do but will not allow hunting, they would rather hire a federal trapper with a dep permit to slaughter them.
Back to camp bob, we have seen this closure before and IMHO, it is because of a change in commander at the base. We used to hold hunt tests for retrievers and pointers with the blessing of one commander, but had permission pulled by a new incoming commander. The main responsibilty of a military base is to train military, hunting and fishing are considered non essential. I look forward to being able to bow hunt camp bob once again, but like FHL will not hold my breathe...
