This was a hunt at Fort Hunter Liggett in March of 2005 with Rick (Westy). We were actually trying to roost some turkeys when Rick spotted some hogs down below us. Another turkey hunter spotted the same hogs and stalked them for a shot below us. He missed and the hogs ran up the ridge to Westy where he wacked the big boar.

On the slo-mo you can see two puffs of dirt from the 7mm hitting the hog and then exiting the hide on the far side.

Boar weighed 275 lbs. on the Fort scale and didn't have much for ivory, maybe an inch. Pretty tough animal to take a 7mm in the boiler room and not even flinch and still make the top of the ridge on the run.

Camcorder was a Canon GL-2.

Good thing he was shot with lead. Imagine how far he would have run if shot with copper.

For those wonderin, rifle was a Ruger 7mm Rem Mag.

People say hogs can't see very far, I still call BS on that. In this video you see the hogs run half way up the ridge and stop. They check the ridgeline for danger and then continue running uphill. The boar just missed Westy sneaking down the spine of the ridge.

We knew the hogs would run uphill once the hunter below us spooked them so Westy took off around the left ridge to flank them. I stayed at the truck in case they ran dead away from the hunter below.

Pig died just over the top of the ridge, thank god. Maybe 100 yards of rope was needed. If he had made it down that other side of the ridge it would have been a chore to get him out. Real thick nasty steep stuff with poison oak everywhere. It got dark fast and I think this was the trip we had a cougar circling us while we hooked the hog up and drug him out in the dark. Westy may remember better.

GL-2s are around $1000 for a used one. New maybe $1400. It's a prosumer model which is a step up from they lower priced handycams. The big advantage of this cam is the onboard zoom and being able to put a windscreen on the onboard mic or hooking up an external shotgun mic. The wind plays hell on a handycam mic.

The video is a lot clearer on my computer or burned to a DVD, when it's uploaded to YouTube they crunch the crap out of it.

HuntrPat, yeah I figured some of the FHL regulars would recognize that good glassing spot. We've wacked a few hogs from there.

This was Westy's first trip to FHL. He went 2 for 3 in his next trips and would have went 3 for 3 if he had sighted in his shotgun scope.
<
3 for 3 would be almost unheard of for a FHL rookie.

The shotgun miss was on my "Ghost Pig" in area 30. At least we're pretty sure it was the Ghost.

I tried to video a pheasant hunt, and I have a new respect for videographers. It is harder than it looks. You video came out great, and a GREAT shot.
