S ince it was explored in 1852 by Douglas Houghton, Michigan's first geologist, Houghton Lake has been one of the Great Lakes state's great phenomena. It is the Lower Peninsula's largest inland lake (22,000 acres, or the size of four townships), it is shallow (30 feet maximum), and it is loaded with freshwater game fish.
