The Big Lagoon tag numbers were reduced for both hunts to 6 each this year. This was a Regional recommendation along with the landowners of the entire hunt boundary. The number of elk within the hunt boundary has decreased and to many hunters on a small number of elk has the potential for a safety issue and quality of hunt issue along with potential to over harvest a small subset of elk.

Archery tags are a tricky thing. We try to base them on a demand success model. Many of the archery hunts have high success, so on a normal hunt you would issue more archery tags to harvest less animals but many of these hunts we can not do that because of the success rate. We have to look at the overall hunting population and what they want and try to put that in perspective for hunts.
