Counting it down!
<

I'm outta here next Thursday, and will be hunting at first light Saturday! This is the same place I hunted two years ago (here's the write-up if you're interested). It's under new management now, and after talking with the new outfitter, it sure sounds promising. It also looks like I've lucked out again, since only my brother and I will be in the guide's camp that week.

Watching the weather every day, packing and re-packing my gear, and daydreaming about big antlers moving through the dark timber.

Aw man... bring it on!

Thanks guys!

I'm pretty stoked. Looks like a dust of snow on the high country over the weekend. It won't be as dry as last year, and the outfitter said he's been seeing a bunch of bulls. During the archery hunts, he had hunters on bulls every day (they didn't all connect, but that's archery hunting).

AS, knock 'em dead, and we'll have some elk bugers at Chopper's in December!

Man I read your article and now I'm realy green with envy.

I told Kirk I want in on the next Choppers trip with you guys.

I'll bring some Carne for the BBQ.

Good luck and I cant wait to read the next chapter.

AS,

I've been checking Weather Underground daily, and loving what I'm seeing. Snow dusting the high country, mild mid-day temps, and not too much wind!

Also, spoke with the outfitter yesterday. He said they have seen more good bulls this year than he has in years. The wet weather last year appears to have helped a lot. The bugling in the area we'll be hunting (Unit 62) has dropped off a bit, but he said there's still some going on. I'm looking forward to hearing it on a crispy cold morning!

Dangit... is it time to go yet?

My brother went up to the yurt we're staying at, on his walk up he kicked up a couple does & saw a group of 8 w/ a few spikes 1/4 mile below. Another guy was up there earlier in the week and kicked up 3 cow elk (i have a cow tag) 200 yards from the yurt and on his walk back in the dusting of snow, two bear crossed his trail........they pulled 2 bulls out of there 3 weeks ago during archery season, but hoping there's one left for my group.

Heh heh... it's gonna be tough to wipe the grin off my face the rest of the day. Supposed to be working, but all I can see is big ol' bulls and the beauty of the western Rockies!

Looks like a little light weather this weekend... could mean some more snow up high.

The truck is packed...just gotta pull the rifles out of the safe and toss them in tomorow morning on the way to the freeway. This time next week, I'l be looking back at the whole thing and (hopefully) telling success stories.

Good luck Phil. I just got off the phone with United about my elk hunt. I am trying to decide whether to drive to NM or fly. I can use air miles and then rent an SUV for $245 for the week. The other guys in camp will have pickups for the actual hunting. Driving would be about $360+ in gas plus two motel rooms plus 36 hours of driving in total. I still want to drive though !!

Anyway, have a blast and shoot a big one and post of the pics

Good Luck Phil,
I'm headin' up to Meeker area, the 19th to get set for my hunt the 22nd-28th. Private ranch, bunkhouse accomodations, horses, the whole magilla! One of my huntin' pards' knows one of the owners an' set this up bout' a year ago! Hope there'll be some meat in the deal...but if not, the trip an' scenery will be great just the same. Lookin' forward to your Post, when you return!

Hey Bob, glad to see you're still around. Hadn't heard from you in a while.

Good luck up in Meeker. From the things I'm hearing, it's gonna be a promising season this year. Proof will be in the pudding, so to speak, so I'm hoping to have a big ol' serving of pudding this weekend!

Steve, I did the math and it would be a lot cheaper for me to just fly into Montrose for this hunt, but I'm really looking forward to the road trip. Gonna take the scenic route home across the desert, and enjoy Natural Bridges and the Grand Canyon. Otherwise, it definitely makes the most sense to fly right now. Never thought I'd see that day!

Good luck on your hunt too!

Well.. gotta pack this machine up and get this show on the road! Ya'll take care!
