Had an oportunity to go hunting with my original hog hunting mentor last night. Well of course I can be ready and at your house in 15 minutes!! We arrived at the ranch with plenty of day light left. Starting at the center of the ranch, armed with my bowtech, we headed west looking for sign. Since nobody has hunted there for months, should be plenty. Hiking up a hill and as we crested the ridge...he backs down and whispers.."pig...base of the oak...pig..." ok! Here we go!

I put a stalk on, wind direction, check! Sun...check! Cover...check! Stalk...crouch...crawl...stalk..."psssst.....psssst...hey...its a calf!!" Ok....I see now...yup...calf. oopp...there's mom cow.. so we hunt on. Much hiking and glassing. Sign everywhere, great! Coming down a hill side into the canyon... crouch, glass, glass..."up there!! Look!" I look through the nikons and bam! 2 huge hogs up the canyon, just wandering down. I was almost thinking 2 calves because of the size and color. After waiting awhile, much glassing and waiting for good clear view...yup...2 huge hogs! 250+ pounders!! The stalk is on again! Creep....crawl....wait, wait, creep....glass....SOWS!! pregger sows! Grrrr... ok, wow those are big sows!!

Hunt on elswhere. We made our way around another ridge towards a water hole. By now I'm thinking about remaining sun light. Cross another canyon, up to the ridge to glass. Cows. More cows.....HOG! About 400 yards down, middle of the cows! Oh its on now!! Using all possible cover I made my way over. Doing my best not to spook any cows and alert the boar. The boar is near the fence line of the adjacent ranch. But on our side. As we get closer...BRRRR...BRRROOMMM... the sounds of a john deer atv. The next door rancher...also pig hunting. Now its funny because their rifle was drawn on that boar...till they spotted us. Then....they just drove off. Hmmm?

I continued my stalk until the cows alerted the boar and poof....vacancy! A little discouraged and much talk of the next door rancher type guys possible hunting ethics...we headed out. We were busy griping as we hiked when...boop! Boar! Out from the base of an oak he pops up! My bow in sling, on my shoulder....rookie a** move! The lil guy stopped about 40 yards, waited for me to get one knocked....grinned and ran off as the sun started its way down. Well....I guess that's why its called hunting instead of shopping!

Well i glad to know now i am not the only one who put a stalk on cows. LOL
A couple years back at lake sonoma i was with someone hunting pigs, it was a little overcast and about a mike away on a hillside i see 3 big black figures milling around so i told my partner what i was glassing, but i noticed they were not moving around much and came to the conclusion they were cows. So he looks through his binos and says those are pigs. So the stalk was on trying to speed walk a mile to close the deal on the pigs, so we get to the hillside he creeps up to to get a glimpse and shakes his head, they where cows! No shoot sherlock, man i was out of breath after that stalk and not happy with the wasted energy, still had the whole say to go.
Lesson is to have great binos that are great in low light conditions and light fog so u can tell what the he77 YOU ARE LOOKING At before u put on along distant stalk. And i never hunted with that idiot again, happy ending!
Sounds like u had a great adventurous day out in the field thats for sure, thanks for sharing!....tra
P.s when i first started hunting pigs i did put a stalk for an 1/2 hr. On a big black rock that look like a pig napping on a ridge. Man i never felt so stupid as hunter, but it was funny!....tra

Ok, here's this mornings report. So, almost starting out from where we left off in the canyon. We make our way further today. We hit the ranch at about 6am and traveled by atv to the last place we saw the 2 huge sows. We leave the atv and put a hike on. We sat next to the canyon glassing water areas. We both glassed the canyon wall for about an hour. As the sun crested and shade faded off the face of the canyon, we spot one. Bedded down, its large, black and 320 yards off. As the hog gets some sunlight it raises and starts milling around. Ducks behind a live oak and comes out. Behind it...1...2...3...5...7..8 more hogs. After some debating we make our way west to intersect the bacon. After losing them, much climbing and locating them... we decided on the lead boar. They were shaded up once again and looking to bed down again. Last night being near full moon. After some time, I started a 288 yard stalk up the canyon. Being silent isn't so easy in dry brush, weeds and scrub oak. I did my best to step a on rock when I could. My hearts pumping now. Stop, rest, focus. Keep stalking. As I close the gap I can smell them. I'm also really worried about alerting them. I was glad I took a land mark from the other side. As I came on the landmark, I realized how close I was to the bedding rocks. Stop, breath, rest, focus. Need to be steady, hearts pounding. I'm 40 yards now. 30, 20.... I can see them bedded. 10 yards!! There's the boar, posted in front of his herd at a vantage point and facing away from me. I crept inches and seemed like an eternity. Ears are twitching from flys!! The boar doesn't notice me but the others do! To my left was a small, what honestly looked like another smaller boar. I turned and shot. Thwack! I nailed this hog. Everbody takes off, party over. I realize its a sow. I got a small lecture about sow shooting after I drug this pig 300 yards.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's wrong with harvesting sows? It seems my prefer meat from them.

Can I presume the Ranch owner, whose property you were hunting, didn't like the taking of sows?

Most of the sows we had seen were bred sows, so his concern was harvesting a bred sow.

IMO shooting a sow will hurt next year's hunting. There's always boars around and often a sow is a lot easier to get close to. Where's the fun in that? Boar meat tastes just like any other pork. Usually.

Yeah, it wasn't the boar we wanted, I really did figure it was a little boar from the night before last, judging by color and size. However, its hard to ask a hog at just a few yards away to roll over for a nut check.

Funny you should mention that. They are a non game animal and feral cows do exist in the wilds of California. So if your lucky enough to find them on public land don't hesitate to shoot! As long as you have your hunting license of course, or if being attached by one, which
Ever comes first.
