I'm planning a trip to oregon for the elk archery season. There's so much land to hunt i'm having a hard time narrowing it down where to go. I'm thinking sw oregon, maybe s.dixon/ n.rogue or e. tioga, melrose, sixes. Siskiyou nat forest, rougue national forest. Maybe farther saddle mtn, look out mtn. The orfw web site says some controlled hunts like saddle mtn are otc for archery. Any imput would be great, thanks.

the dixon unit holds a lot of elk and there is plenty of public lands to hunt. Theres BLM, National forests and a few wilderness areas to choose from. If you get away from the roads you can have a really good hunt. You may want to check out some areas in and around the Apple creek fire that burned a few years back.

You'll see bigger crowds the more north you go on the coast. More elk as well. Crowds increase toward the end of the season once the rut kicks in. Also, last few years it's been really dry. Most of the timber outfits have closed their land down under the first rains or so. Nat Forest and BLM is always open. Mind the pot guys as SW corner is still the main growing area. It's all over the place but the worst is Douglas, Jackson, Josephine and Coos counties.
