never hunted it personally but i do know its straight up and down in most places so be prepared for that. theres plenty of elk up in that area and there are some decent bulls as well. good luck.
I drew the Snake River Area buck deer tag.
So am in the same boat as you trying to get to know the area.
I will be getting over to scout it 2 or 3 times however as I live in Boise, just 3 hours or so away.
Supposedly there is a good elk herd in there.
I will try to remember to get back on here and let you know if I see any good elk spots when I am over there scouting.
I have contacted a lot of people about the unit and not gotten much info. back.
Tim Johnson at Fishhawk Guiding Service was a nice gun and very knowledgeable about the area. You may want to contact him. He runs jet boats in the Hells Canyon and he was a game warden in the unit for many years.
Good luck.
I was up there today. The Hell's Canyon breaks from The overlook to Hat Point looks good to me.With good optics you could spot game for miles.A horse or mule would be great in some spots. If not be prepared to bone and pack meat, probably uphill. It may be possible to make arrangements with a jet boat outfitter to haul out your meat if you get it to the river. Tough country. Look it over before you shoot one in a place you can't handle. You may find one near the top. It's also a good place to have a bear or cougar tag in your pocket if you are so inclined.Good tag.
