Anyone here familiar with the rifle range at Oroville Wildlife Area? I have been there twice but both times made me uncomfortable. You can shoot to 500 yards and it is flat but very few shooting there seem to follow any kind of shooting safety procedures. There is no range master just an open shooting area with concrete benches. I have seen people pull up and walk down range to put up targets without waiting for guys to take a break from shooting and usually the guys shooting are unaware someone has even gone downrange. I have had guys be reluctant to cease fire while I went downrange to retrieve my targets. I don't get it and do not like to shoot there. I normally shoot at Spenceville and while it is not perfect I am much more comfortable there since most follow normal range safety procedures. I would like to shoot more at Oroville since it does have targets 200-300 yards further downrange than Spenceville I am just not sure I should. I would never shoot at Oroville without a partner to help with communication. I am more familiar with private ranges where everyone is very safety conscious or public ranges with very strict range masters.

I been there about 5 times and I wear Blaze Orange with a partner to make sure.... I have gone there with a lot of other people there and been there where there was no body there.... The times with a lot of people I just yell out hold your fire!!! Setting up targets/ changing targets and peopl just yell down the line. We all check or set targets and than yell out Fire in the hole!!!.. Than resume. But I wouldn't trust it since there's no Range Master. Best thing is go with a partner, be aware of what's around u and wear Blaze Orange I guess. Other than that I had a good experience there

Thanks for the info guys. We were the first ones at the range on a Thursday the last time I was there. We set up in the middle area and when we wanted to go downrange I went one way informing guys of my intentions and he went the other way. Still 2 shooters were hesitant to stop shooting. One guy was there right after we got there so he had been shooting for an hour without a break but still made me wait to go downrange. Never have had guys at Spenceville refuse to take a break. I will probably go back to Oroville again to see what happens and it will be early and mid week. I have been to Spenceville before legal light and still could not get a decent bench on weekdays but I wait until one opens up or at least I usually do. I am changing scopes on 2 guns and I would like to shoot beyond 200 but 200 may have to be far enough for now.
