FISHING FOR GIANTS



Filmmaker Mikey Wier will share a film about his fly-fishing adventures to a Mongolian river in search of the taimen, one of the world's largest salmonids – the family of fish that includes trout and salmon – during a meeting of the Sacramento- Sierra Chapter of Trout Unlimited at 7 p.m. today.

A raffle and silent auction to benefit Northern California's cold-water resources will follow. It will be held at the Mission Oaks Community Center, 4701 Gibbons Drive, Carmichael.

RAPTOR ID WORKSHOP



Learn how to spot the difference between a golden eagle and a turkey vulture from raptor specialist Larry Broderick during a workshop and viewing program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Rush Ranch Nature Center on Grizzly Island Road off Highway 12 in Suisun.

The Winter Trails Day event on Saturday will offer snowshoe demonstrations (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) and mini-ski lessons (10 a.m.- 2 p.m.; reservations required through Kirkwood) hosted by REI and Kirkwood at Kirkwood Cross Country Ski Area and Snowshoe Center (Highway 88 between Caples and Silver lakes).

Be prepared for avalanche terrain before your next backcountry adventure. REI will offer a safety awareness class led by Aaron Johnson from Mountain Adventure Seminars on Tuesday at REI Roseville (1148 Galleria Blvd.), Jan. 20 at REI Sacramento (1790 Expo Parkway) and Jan. 21 at REI Folsom (2425 Iron Point Road) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Cost is $20 general, $18 members, free for ages 15 and younger.

SHOREBIRDS LECTURE



The long-billed curlew will be among the migratory shorebirds discussed at the Yolo Basin Foundation's Flyway Nights lecture "Wings Over Borders – Migration of Shorebirds Around the Pacific Basin."

The talk, led by Nils Warnock, will be held at 7 tonight at the Department of Fish and Game's Yolo Wildlife Area Headquarters, 45211 Chiles Road, Davis. It costs $5 general, free for Yolo Basin members.
