FOR THE ANGLERS



• Experts on fly fishing will headline the American Fly Fishing Co. open house, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Information will be available about guided trips and local fishing conditions from those experts, including Jamie Lyle from Sage, an equipment maker; and Pat Vermillion of Sweetwater Travel. There will be a book- signing for "Fly Fishing the California Delta" (No Nonsense, $49.95, 192 pages), fly-tying and casting demonstrations, and demos of new equipment. Also, the Western Lights Band will perform bluegrass music, and there will be free food and drawings.

• Bring your tackle box to SMUD's Rancho Seco Lake (14440 Twin Cities Road) for the semiannual trout derby, 6 a.m.- 5 p.m. Dec. 12-13.

The 160-acre lake will be stocked with 2,000 pounds of trout. Anglers who hook the heaviest trout will be awarded cash prizes of up to $100 for adults and $50 for children under 16. The derby fee is $3, plus a park-entrance fee of $5 per vehicle, $4 for seniors. Anglers age 16 and older must have a valid state fishing license.

WINTER WORKOUT



Clif Bar's women's team, the Luna Chix, will discuss outdoor activities for winter fitness at a free workshop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Roseville's REI, 1148 Galleria Blvd.

The presentation will include information on winter events and programs offered by Northstar's Cross-Country Ski, Snowshoe and Telemark Center, including its snowshoe race series and telemark camps.

LOOK FOR SIGNS OF WINTER WILDLIFE



Trekkers will learn about the wildlife of the Lake Berryessa area on an easy-to-moderate hike from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 12.

For an extra treat, the group participating in the walk in the Quail Ridge Reserve will be served complimentary mulled wine, spiced cider and holiday cookies. It will be led by zoologist-ecologist Frank Maurer, executive director of the Quail Ridge Wilderness Conservancy.
