INSIDE THE WILD WORLD OF BATS
Get up close to live bats and learn about the myths and superstitions that haunt the flying mammals in a program titled "Bats: Not Just for Halloween," recommended for adults and children 7 and older, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, 2850 San Lorenzo Way, Carmichael.
The cost is $2 per person, plus a $5 park entrance fee per car.

HAWK WATCH
Ed Pandolfino will discuss the Central Valley Wintering Raptor Survey at a free program presented by the Friends of the Swainson's Hawk and the Sacramento Audubon Society.
The event will be held 6:45-8:45 p.m. next Thursday at the South Natomas Community Center, 2921 Truxel Road, Sacramento.

FALL HIKES
• Plan your route using a map and compass at Sunday's orienteering meet at Mississippi Bar (on the north shore of Lake Natoma) in Fair Oaks, hosted by the Gold Country Orienteers; registration is from 9 a.m. to noon; courses start between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.; cost is $6 general, $5 for members, $2 for a second map or second course; (916) 922-8671 or www.goldcountryorienteers.org.
• Learn about sandhill cranes, shorebirds, hawks and other wildlife of the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge during a free seasonal wetland hike from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 24; www.fws.gov/stonelakes.
• Frank Maurer, the Quail Ridge Wilderness Conservancy executive director, will lead an interpretive walk 2:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 24 on Quail Ridge Reserve on the peninsula at the southwest end of Lake Berryessa; donations accepted; reservations required: (530) 758-1387.
• The Effie Yeaw Nature Center in Carmichael will hold an autumn nature walk through its riparian habitat at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24, guide a group on a walk to discover the "Wildlife of the Season" at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 25, and host a nature walk at William Pond Recreation Area from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 29; park entrance fee is $5 per car; (916) 489-4918.
YOUTH WATERFOWL DAYS
The California Waterfowl Association and Community Youth Center of Concord are hosting a lineup of hunts for youth at Grizzly Ranch on Suisun Marsh off Highway 12.
Junior hunts are $50 and include educational materials, membership, lodging, breakfast and lunch.
