SPORTSMEN'S EXPO

The 23rd annual International Sportsmen's Exposition kicks off today at Cal Expo.

Joining the popular outdoors and travel event this year will be a Boy Scouts 100-Year Celebration Pavilion, an elk-calling contest and an accuracy casting contest.

Hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $15 general, free for ages 15 and younger.

WINTER FUNDRAISERS

• Ski for $25 when you purchase an advance Skiing for School Days lift ticket to benefit local schools.

The Skiing for School Days schedule includes Boreal Mountain Resort (www.borealski.com) on Sunday; Sugar Bowl (www.sugarbowl.com), March 20; Homewood Mountain Resort (www.skihomewood.com), March 21; Squaw Valley USA (www.squaw.com), April 11; and Alpine Meadows (www.skialpine.com), April 18.

• Ski and wine vendors will share the spotlight when Atlantis Casino Resort Spa hosts its 10th annual Winter Wine and Ski Expo, a benefit for Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, at 6 p.m. Jan. 28.

Atlantis is at South Virginia Street and Peckham Lane in Reno. Tickets are $55 advance, $65 at the door.

BACKYARD BIRD COUNT

Take part in the Feb. 12-15 bird count conducted by the Sacramento Audubon Society.

All ages can participate. You can enter your tally on the National Audubon Society's Great Backyard Bird Count Web site, www.birdcount.org. Workshops are being held for beginning birders at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Franklin Library (10055 Franklin High Road, Elk Grove); 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Natomas Library (2500 New Market Drive, Sacramento); 2 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Arden-Dimick Library (891 Watt Ave., Sacramento); 4 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Sylvan Oaks Library (6700 Auburn Blvd., Citrus Heights); and 2 p.m. Feb. 6 at the South Natomas Library (2901 Truxel Road, Sacramento).

WINTERING VISITORS

"The Loon's Necklace" is a nature film that tells the story of how the loon got the distinctive band around its neck. The film screening is part of the free programs that will take place during the 11th annual Snow Goose Festival, Jan. 28-31 in Chico.

The celebration of the winter waterfowl migration includes field trips, workshops and nature activities for children at various locations. Fees range from $2 to $42.
