The Duck Creek Conservation Area, near Puxico in southeastern Missouri, will not be available for hunting during the upcoming teal season because of construction. Water control structures built when the area first opened in 1952 are being replaced in an $800,000 project. A catfish tournament to benefit veteran river angler Jerry Poole, O'Fallon, who suffered a heart attack, will be held Sept. 9 on the Missouri River at Blanchette Park in St. Charles, beginning at 7 a.m. Entry fee is $40 per boat, with a 50 percent payback. A 17-inch white crappie caught by Gabriel Brown of Berkeley has been certified as a line-test, catch-and-release record by the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame,The fish was caught on 10-pound line out of the Tennessee part of Kentucky Lake April 17.

A free wingshooting clinic for beginners will be held Sept. 22-23 at the Kaskaskia River/Baldwin Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, near Baldwin, Ill.

Saturday is for shooters 10-15 years of age. Sunday is for women all ages from 10 years. Instruction will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Registration is from 9 a.m. -10 a.m.

All supplies, including shotguns and ammunition, are provided.

Sponsors are the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Waterfowl USA, Zanders Sporting Goods, New Athens Sportsman Club, Freeburg Sportsman's Club, Monroe County Chapter and Turkey Bluffs chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation and Quail Unlimited.

A catch-and-release muskie tournament to benefit the Illinois Conservation Foundation will be held Oct. 19-21 on Lake Shelbyville out of Eagle Creek State Park.

In the tournament, judges will be station around the lake in boats. They will respond to radio calls to measure and record fish. Scoring will begin at 32 inches.

The entry fee is $80 per boat. Top prizes will be $1,000, $500 and $250, with an additional $300 for the biggest muskie.

The annual dinner/auction of the Missouri Deer Hunters Club will be Sept. 8 at the Meramec Eagles Club in Arnold.Guns, bows and other equipment will be raffled along with framed wildlife art. Proceeds will be used to aid deer management and fund club activities.
