On another thread, Upper was asking about pack equipment so I thought I'd start a thread on it.

I am a die hard Decker packsaddle fan. I feel that with enough rope and horses or mules I can do almost anything.

I learned to pack on the St. Joe River from Will and Barbara Judge. We spent the summer taking folks in from the end of the road to the famous St. Joe Lodge. So my mainstays were a basket hitch and occasional barrel hitch. We mantied everything. I think we only had 1 set of box panniers, maybe 2. Very Seldom did we do a top pack, so I never got real good at throwing a diamond. We put a crowsfoot (a loop from the tie-off on the basket hitch through a ring on the cinch) on all our loads.

Preference of brand ...I like Ray Holes Equipment, from Grangeville Idaho. It's expensive but good quality stuff. Most Idaho outfitters will agree.

Spent a summer in the Eagle Cap mostly dayrides
<
and a few pack trips.

What were your specific questions upper?

Thanks for the info 2Rocky,I packed in the late 1970,s and early80,s.The only buckle I ever won was for a world champion mule packing team in Bishop Ca.I have always had and been around horses and this year took a trip to fish a creek that I have not fished in over 30 years.Belive it or not it was just as good as when I left it.Anyway Im thinking of backing out of the Quad deal and getting back into the packing deal.Just wanted to see what was good and what was the same. Thanks for the thread.PS do you know any guides around Makay Id. I was in the Panhandle East of St. Maries. The nearest town was actually St. Regis Montana. I never got down into the Salmon Country.

Once I got the career and family, I kinda let the packing slip. Now I ususallly can get away for a couple weeks for an elk hunt out of state, with my family, and that's it. Everything else is a quick weekend backpacking trip....

Now I had to go back and look at some pictures, Ah memories...
