I posted earlier today about a guide out of Parkfield. After a few hours of posting, I noticed it was removed. I assume by the Moderator. I think I PM'd the moderator correctly to ask why but am not certain. I am still learning about the options of this board. Mr. Moderator if you see this...why was it removed? It was a possitive post about a guide in Parkfield who does not feel the need to advertise because of his steady clientel and return customers. I did however think that some of you would be interested in his service as he is in my opinion one of the best. I was surprised it was removed. I have noticed in the past some negative posts about guides replete with their names, etc. in the past that were never removed, so mine being a "happy" post I would have thunk it to be A-OK. Can someone enlighten me?

I don't know what happened, but I did notice your post earlier and it could have easily been constued as "spam" or an advertisement. This has been a big problem lately and the mods are cracking down on it. I am sure you meant no harm with you post and the moderato that ulled it will be in contact with you soon.

Tusker,

As Docapi pointed out we've been getting hammered with ads and spam lately here. Some from the owners of the businesses and some coming in the back door from others who help them advertise in a little less obvious way.

Since you are fairly new here and we don't know you well yet we pulled to ad to the pending forum to check it out. Since you're posting about your hunt experience with the outfit I'll move it back.

I hope you understand why we have to keep the ads from becoming overwhelming.

Thanks

Hey Tusker,

I see that Jesse already got this squared away for you. Disregard my last PM.

Thanks, Jesse

I have noticed a little commerce slipping in lately. I appreciate these forums as a few square inches of my computer screen and my life where there are no ads- not much of that real estate left these days.

Ok, thanks, guys. I understand. I didn't realize it sounded like an advertisement for a guy that doesn't even advertise, ironic, isn't it? Anyways...I can appreciate the situation. I just decided I would pass on my experience as I have seen others ask for info or recommendations on guides and all. I really should have called the guy I mentioned to make sure he had no objections to me posting his name and all, but felt if he hires out as a guide, no harm done. I do enjoy the diverse posts and with my son in the Marine Corp and currently in Kuwait, I need all the diversion I can get. Sorry if it appeared I was spamming. I wasn't trying to.

Tusker,

No problem, most of us can appreciate helping out a friend. I may be looking for a hog hunt later this year. I'll PM you about your friend. (Sorry, I know you guide archers, but in deference to the hogs i'm not aiming at, my guide and any nearby wildlife, I don't use a bow

Mark, Ok here it is. I have hunted this ranch twice. the first occasion was last march. I actually called a different outfitter but he was booked. He recommended this other guy in Parkfield, so I called him. I called him in the AM one day, and showed up that very same afternoon. I arrived there around 3pm, just a few hours before it was to get dark. We promtly got into an old beat up 4x4 and headed into his back country. We didn't go far before we spoted a herd of pigs of around 25 or so rooting in an open field. They didn't make us out and we glassed the herd from about 150 yards away. The largest boar was around 150lbs. I told him I wanted to hold out. He said no problem. We kept on and it started to get dark so we went to an area he said the pigs were sure to use as a corridor to and from their bedding grounds. They never really showed up but as we hiked back to the 4x4 we came up on a sow with piglets. It was almost dark then but I could make them out and of course, I passed as he would have wanted me to. Not cool to kill mother with small babies, right? Besides...I was looking for a tusker. Being as it got dark and it was around 35 degrees, and stupid me...no jacket being from Santa Maria where it was in the 60's at that time of day I left Parkfield to go home. Got up at 3am dressed properly this time and drove back. It's about 1 1/2 hour drive if I hump it. Got there by 5:30 and we headed out by 6am. We took off again and I must have spotted without exagerating 75 pigs or so but all were small boars or sows and piglets. He usually hunts until around 10 or 11 am at the latest and calls it lunch and rest time until again that afternoon around 3pm. But he decided to check out one little canyon very very close to where his home was. There we found around 10 pigs sunning and frolicking around a flat clearing. There was a boar of around 200lbs and I decided that would do. Not really what I wanted, but I thought this is day two and I should go for it. I put him in my cross hairs and he was maybe 50 yards away. Easy kill or so I thought. Just as I squeezed the trigger ever so gently, the boar moved to one side and I swear I hit it and so did he, but after shooting, all the pigs scattered of course and he went into the thick brush with me looking down above and he found no blood trail or evidence I hit the boar. I was bummed about that. I was begining to doubt myself with such an easy shot. We broke for lunch. I went my way into the town of Parkfield , ate at the only restaurant there. Good place I might add. I just hung out in my truck napping until it was around 3pm and then we hooked up again. We headed out way back into his ranch and saw many pigs but they alway saw us first and quickly disappeared before we could set up. That is until....we spotted 5 pigs really humping it up this hill (mountain really) from around 500 yards away. He said there was a large boar amongt them and we worked our way over to where he thought they would be heading. Low and behold, after humping it up and down and up and down several hills...we came upon them at about 75 yards out. He got really excited as there was a boar amongst them that he said weighed 325lbs or so. I saw it and I gotta tell ya, I started to get really, really pumped as it was exactly what I was looking for. He said to be careful the wind kep shifting and these critters were skittish to say the least. I was sucking air big time after the hike up and down those hills. He said take my shot and take it fast, they were going to bail. I just had enough time to find the boar in my scope only to see him stick his nose into the air, sniff...snort and run like hell. He made us. I was totally bummed. The area is very thick with brush and such. He was gone. Both of us were disappointed. He gave me some good advice. Next time...shoot your damn rifle. He was cool about it, but he made it clear I had an opportunity and we both busted our asses all day just for that one chance. Oh well...such is life. Live and learn. Anyhow...we checked other areas and the same thing...lots of little guys and sows. It was getting late and we had maybe an hour of light left by this time. So I picked a little guy of around 70 lbs at 100 yards out of a herd of maybe 25 pigs rooting. Bam! Got it in the boiler room with my 7mag. We dressed it out, quarted it. And that was that.

I did go again last Nov. Under the same circumstances. I called that day, showed up that afternoon. We hunted hard until dark and did not see one pig. I spet the night at the Parkfield Inn. An OK place. Got up the next AM and cruised around , again....no piggies sighted. It was a very bright full moon the night before. Let me say I know the pigs were there as right at the very Inn I stayed at, they roto tilled the grass pretty darn hard...right outside my room and I didnt even know it. The pigs were obviously out all night hence the reasons we didnt see them before or again that AM. Around 11 am, Roger the guide said...Hey, you may want to come back another day. We will just call this a half hunt and I will owe you another half hunt. I agreed and was glad he offered. He didnt have to but he did and I have yet to return. I do expect to go soon, though. I will return soon under favorable conditions and get that big ole tusker. That's my story.
