Good Morning Gents,

I am looking for any reccomendations for a peep sight for a Wincheshter Model 94 30-30. I really don't want to put a scope on it, but with a peep sight I can shoot pretty accurately at a long distance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jess.

Thanks Gents for the info.

Rancho, how far do you feel comfortable taking a shot with the ghost ring sights on your 30-30?

30-30? Who uses one of those pop-guns? I've got mine in .444 Marlin shooting 300 grain bullets.

Just kidding...30-30 is a fine round, if you can hit what you're aiming at. Right Speckmisser?

My Timber Carbine is for close in work, 50 yards or less in brush, tunnels, or beds is the intention. I could try out to 100 yards, but I have come to the realization that it's just too light, and the barrel is too short (18") for me to do any quick off hand shots accurately at that range. If I had a good rest, I guess I would, just as long as I could ice my shoulder down later.

You most likely are more steady than I am, and your rifle might have a longer barrel..I'd say give 'em a shot, I haven't heard a bad review.

I've been contemplating in getting a 7mag for those longer shots but I kinda don't want to replace my 30-30. I've been using it to hunt with for almost 20yrs. I've taken 2 hogs with it this year, one at 100yds. open sights and the other at about 60yds. Don't want to get a scope for those longer shots. When I was in the Corps I got spoiled with peep sights on my M-16 A2. Just wanted to give it a shot with my 30-30 to see if it would make a difference on those longer shots. I'm an old fashion guy, that believes in not fixin somethin that's not broken, but I think I'm at a point where I might want a change.

All suggestions and reccomedations are welcome. I take all answers into perspective to make a logical decision for myself. Thanks for the help so far and keep the info coming.

Thanks, Jess.

I'd second the "vote" for the Ghost Rings. They're a ton better than the factory sights, although the sights on my Winchester USED TO BE PRETTY GOOD (rancho).

If you could shoot 100 yards with your old iron sights, then you're going to LOVE the Ghost Rings for the same yardage. They're not going to extend your range, and that's not the intent. But they will provide better target acquisition and a more confident sight picture than the iron, which should improve your accuracy both at close range and whatever you consider your outer limits.

The Lyman is good too, but if I were choosing between them, I'd go Ghost Rings.

Thanks Speck,

I think I just might give them a shot. When I first saw them on the website, I had a flashback of my sights on my M16 and I just have to have them now. Hopefully I can get them over here in Bako at 2nd Amendment Sports (mini Cabelas).

Thank you once again,
Jess.

I have XS Ghost Rings on my 94 Ranger Compact in .357 mag, and a Williams 5D on my 1894 Marlin 44 mag, and i'd recommend either, both excellent. My longest shot was 125 yards on 300+ pound pig dropped like Thor's Hammer hit um.

Ive used a williams peep sight before on a remington 700 carbine 308, works great out to about 100-125yrds then my accuracy starts dwindling. Im a big fan of the williams though, only problem with mine is the actually peep would come a little unscrewed after shooting a box of rounds. Some loctite fixed this problem fast.

$95 for the ghost rings has kept me from buying them. I guess I will have to bite the bullet soon, I haven't heard a bad thing about them! My mod. 94 is scoped right now but I don't care for the bulk.

Wow, $95 for the ghost rings. I guess I better start buttering up mamsan and get her that nice digital camera she has been wanting.

Thanks again for all the input gentlemen.

For the 94 it looks like the front sight is replaced with the sight coming with ghost ring setup? Does this need gunsmithing? Looks like the ghost ring front sight is bolted on. My 94 has a wedged front sight. I certainly would hate to pay $90 for the rings and another $100 for gunsmithing. That's 2/3 of what the gun costs!

The front sight is drifted out and replaced by the XS front post.

The rear GRA is screwed into the rear scope screw holes.

The existing sight on your rifle can be then replaced with a blank availible from Brownell's for cheep.
All this is easy enough for anyone to do, even BirdDawg.

Just ordered a 336 Marlin in 30-30 along with 2 boxes of the new hornady ammo 12" drop at 300 yards. have to think about glass or red dot or ghost ring now add some distance to an old brush gun favorite.

Thanks Rancho Loco. This is the type of encouragement I needed. Yes, the "stock" front sight is dove tailed in there, so if the replacement is a dove tail setup too, that will be perfect!

I will buy this sight after x-mas, before heading out on my spring bore hunting trips! Now I need a new gun to mount the bushnell elite scope that will become available.

Never seen ghost rings... will have to look into them.

Have a williams peep on the .357 rifle - Complaints = 0. Excellent!

After reading this post, however, I have a similar dilema: I Just picked up a Ruger 96 chambered in .44mag. It's got the factory Ruger sites, as well as a 1.5-4.5 x 30 RedHead scope. But now I'm wondering if I'd be better replacing both with the ghost rings... ARRRGGGHHHH!

Sorry to hi-jack... maybe I should start another thread... do you think I should replace the scope with ghost rings?

Not to sidetrack, but tell me more about the hornady ammo. What bullet does it have? I will need advice to pick an adequate hog bullet. My remington 150 grain core lokt may not do the trick ...
