Not sure if it really is peer pressure but I caved and purchased some scope mounting specialty tools. I have one gun that is giving me fits so I figured I would bite the bullet and spend $100+ on some fancy tools. I removed the scope and installed the alignment rods and could see that the rods were misaligned by about 1/16 of an inch. I then lapped the rings 3-4 times until the rods pointed exactly at each other. While looking at the rings of course there was more material removed from one side of the rings. I also removed the stock and torqued everything again according to a chart I found. The gun is from the early 60's and just doesn't like copper ammo. It was never a tack drive but it shot way better with old cor lokt ammo than it shoots copper.
I may be wasting my time but it is a gun I want to hand down so I keep playing with it. I know in another thread I questioned the need for lapping a scope and bedding the action but I may try a few more things before I hand the gun down.
Before I took it apart Hornady GMX did about 2 moa. The grandkids father said they can live with that but if I can improve that some I will.
It might be a week or more before I get back to the range so I really don't know if I helped it yet or not.
