Photographer survives avalanche near Togwotee

4/15/02

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - A skier and photographer was shaken but unharmed after surviving a ride down an avalanche near Togwotee Pass.
Jonathan Selkowitz said he ascended the West Ridge of Angle Mountain along with two snowboarders and a telemark skier recently.

He then clipped on his alpine touring skis and went to an east-facing bowl the four planned to ski. Selkowitz recalled that the snow was grainy like corn.

"We were looking at a beautiful, flat, corn slope below us," he said.

As it would turn out, danger lurked just above him. One of his companions triggered a slide he described as sounding like a heavy board snapping.

Selkowitz saw the fracture line extend 150 to 200 yards to his right just as his feet were swept from under him.

As the slide approached a funnel at the bottom of the bowl, he managed to kick off his skis and prepared to try to "swim" above the moving snow.

He said he considered throwing away his camera but decided to photograph the ordeal instead. After snapping several photos, he was carried over a rollover and into the funnel.

The slide came to a stop in the funnel. Also caught in the slide was his girlfriend's dog, who also escaped unscathed.

Lucky bastard. I knew a girl that was caught in an avalanche on Mount Rainer. She was pulled out alive, but by the time rescuers found her guide he had already suffered brain damage.
