"Dr. Jackson took a shot and heard the bullet hit tough hide. But it missed its mark by an inch, and the hog ran off along the fence line and out of sight."
I am a believer in at least a 300WM or a 30-'06 with heavy tough construction bullets for penetrating, puncturing, perforating and pulverizing the vital organs. Animals including humans once in high adrenaline mode need heavy incapacitating calibers to drop them in their tracks or at least slow down their aggression so a follow up shot can be successfully brought to bear and terminate the attack. Once heavy flows of adrenaline kick in................it is a fight to the death for the cornered/injured animal.
When I pull the trigger, I want vital organs destroyed even though thick hide and big leg bones are in the way. Only tough construction heavy caliber bullets will give me enough of that assurance. 'Nuff said.

Belch,
I'm just a fan of "better to have too much gun..........than NOT ENOUGH gun." I use Barnes X bullets so the meat damage is extremely minimal............very little, so it works out for me.....those heavy calibers. Also, I am not a gifted rifle hunter like Jack O'Connor(for those not as old as I am....he is a legend in the 1950-1970's as a gifted rifle hunter/writer author)............so every little bit helps for me. Which for a 192 lb. pig............a Barnes X heavy caliber bullet will reach the vitals from any angle.............tough hide or what not. I am not proposing that folks start banging the big hogs with a hot loaded 45-70 which will sledgehammer the big hogs like a locomotive colliding with a Volkswagen...........but a 30-'06 spitting 180 gr. tough construction bullets will give very good penetration to destroy the vitals. 'Nuff said

larry, jackO's favorite caliber was a .270. i put more merit on bullet placement over anything else. i have never ever shot a big game animal, that didnt drop on the spot. i still question the world, when i see an animal jump and sprint off after a rifle shot, on hunting TV. that has never happened to me. ok, my elk walked 8-10 feet before expiring. i had time to hit him a second time. my bullet holes were 2 inches apart.

what the good doc did wrong was to not give the pig time to die. as any archer does, once the animal is hit, and runs off..sit down, get calm, loose the post shot jitters..i eat the apple i always carry. i think, unless you see the animal drop..give it time. let the critter stiffen up. dont push it while it is all amped up an adrenaline.

sucks the doc got hurt.

Sancho,
What caliber and bullet make and style do you use that seems so effective in incapacitating big game? Seems you dial in to a sweet spot in the animal that triggers nervous system collapse. Kindly fill me in a little bit if you don't mind. Thanks

Larry, my comment wasn't directed at you. You just got me curious to know what he did shoot it with. Hell, I may have to give him a call. Or go see him.

decent medicine if put into the engine room. no big deal.
