why: very flat shooting. short action hence lighter gun.

Scope: Leupold LPS 1.5x6
Why: One of the clearest & brightest scopes out there with Leupold quality. Compact to keep weight down. Need more optics I just use the binocs.

I use 2 Remington 700 Mountain guns...

The first is a 7mm Mauser..
Lightweight ...Classic Caliber...downright fun to shoot.
Taken game all over the world for over a century.
Topped with a Leupold Vari X II 4X scope.. for the brightness and quality.
Didn't lose its zero after the Northridge Earthquake of 1994.

The 2nd is a LSS model in 30 06.
Bought for its weatherproof features
Leupold VariXIII Tactical 3.5-10...because its black and says tactical..LOL..

..in seriousness I picked based on the good luck I had with the other Leupold but wanted alittle more magnification.

Handguns:
Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag
Durability/Accuracy

Kimber Eclipse .45 ACP
Rate of fire in a flat/easily carried package
Quality, accuracy, weatherproof.

Rifle: Savage 110 -
Why? Price and accuracy "out of the box"

Cal: 30-06
Why? Honestly, because that's the caliber of the one I got. I would probably have picked .270, but I'm happy with the -06

Scope - Leupold VX II-3-9x40
Why? After dealing with the weight and inconsistency of a high-mounted Tasco World Class 4-16x50, I realized I didn't need 16 power and a 50mm objective to hunt in the West. The 40mm bell also puts line of sight closer to the barrel, for a more consistent shot at various ranges. I always liked the Tasco World Class line for reliability and value, but once I tried "good glass", I was hooked. No more cheap scopes for me. (Note: If I were going back to treestand hunting in the Southeast, I would probably also go back to the 50mm objective).

Pistol: Ruger Super-Blackhawk
Why? Solid enough to use as a hammer, feels great to hold and shoot, and classic six-shooter lines

Caliber: 44mag.
Why? I intend to hunt with it as a primary, and wanted the oomph for hogs and deer.

Steyr Scout "Jeff Cooper"- Weighs like 5 pounds, carries 2 clips, built in support legs, shoots gooder than I...

.308 - Handles anything, cheap available ammo.

Leupold 2X Scout Long eye relief- Fast aquesition, fast shot, good for up close and personal hogg hunting.

Rifle:
"Sporteried" Mauser. I like the claw extractor, and its a source of pride that I can build the rifle myself.

30-06. Arguably the most available catridge out there, and most versitle. Covers almost anything that can be hunted in North America.

Leupold 4X. The ultimate in simplicity and reliability.


Backup Handgun:
Ruger Vaquero 3-1/2" Birdshead. Just cuz I like it!

45 Colt. Same reason!


Hunting Handgun:
Thompson Contender. Extememly versitle.

Caliber...??? Take your pick. Alot of wildcats to choose from and they all sound like winners. Probably a 35 or 375 cal.

Why: Great gun with short barrel , Remington's 3 "rings" of steel and Great customer service .



Cal: .308
Why: close ballistics to 30.06 with shorter action.


Scope: Simmons 3x9x40
Why: Inexpensive and clear sight i can hit a paper plate at 300yrds everytime and if i break it it's cheap enogh i dont get my panties in a bunch!

Handgun: Glock 20 in 10mm.
Why: 10 + 1 rounds in a semi auto package that is balistically = to the .41 mag.

Rifle: M70 Featherweight (pre-64)
Why: It's what I grew up using

Cal: .30-06
Why: It's versatile and what I'm used to

Scope: retired the Kohler Morgen 6x and put on a Leupold vari X2 3x9
Why: It was in my budget range and a good scope

Sidearm: I'm a lot more accurate now with my GP100 in .357 Mag than my Kimber .45...but, the Kimber's lighter to pack.

I seem to fall back on the winchester as my primary rifle for rifle hunts even though I've got a couple other in suitable cal's that are more accurate rifles off a bench--a .270 & 6mm. But, I can get minute of angle loads from my '06 with reloads which is plenty good enough for hunting purposes. I might transition over to the .270 for giggles and grins for a while.

Remington 7400 Carbine
Only comes in 30-06.

Killed just about all my big game animal with it.


Reddog, I also have a Remington 788. The bolt handle broke off on me as I tried to eject an empty cartridge that jammed in the chamber. Took me three years to finally locate a smith and I think it's the only smith in the US that could put it back together like original. Almost had to throw away that gun. Now I could finally shot it again. So my advise to you is "do not put any pressure on the bolt handle if you get a jam. Stick a small rod inside the barrel to tap out the jam cartridge."

Cal: 30.06 Taken Dogs, Hogs, Deer, and Bear with same gun.

Scope: None - out of the box iron sights.

You know, I'll get rid of that Kimber for you anytime you decide it's not working out. I know, it's a piece of junk, but I have a good junkyard in mind for it.

naw, the fire-power makes up for the lack of accuracy~! I shouldn't have gone squirrelin' as much as I did with it...might need a new barrel...well, a good treatment with sweets will probably bring back some accuracy! That and some decent ammo! Speaking of which, is there a firing range close to camp @ the tejon?

And my Kimber's been good for somethin' more than a squirrel or two in its day. Here's about as close as I'll get to The Bob for some time to come.

I don't know of a firing range nearby. Some of the guys do some shooting in the field, but the Ranch folks really seem to frown on it.

There ought to be some place between there and Bakersfield, though.
