Good Afternoon Gents,

I was wondering if there are any hunts that would be recommended for myself and my 7 yr. old boy. Usually when I go hunting I will cover anywher from 3 to 8 miles of hard road work, but it is a quite bit to much for my little cowboy. Any help would be highly appreciated. My boyshas been eager to go hunting with me.

Thanks a bunch,
Jess

Looks like you were in the military. Do you still have access to military bases? If so, I know a place that has some easy terrain and some hard terrain. Just depends what ya want. There are hogs in both though.

Bobcatjess,
My boy just went on his first hunt at 16. mainly due to my waiting for grades to improve. Now this is just me but, Hog hunting at 7 seems a little young. Personally I would give it a few years of visiting the range and instilling the safety, safety, safety thing followed or alternated with hiking every other weekend or so.
This still ensures some bonding time with dad as well as time to learn and mature a little bit more.

If one of my buddies told me they were taking their 7 year old on a hunt,
I would find a nice way to bow out. Again, that's just my

Well, its hard to find a easy hunt especially on public land. Most of the public land (as you may know) is steep, brushy, or just difficult to hunt. Your best bet is a private hunt. I can't even think of one place thats public and is easy to hunt (physically) and holds pigs. If I knew of a place or anybody else, I don't think anyone would give it up. If you look at all of our national forests, they are either think with brush or just to steep to hike. Good luck though.

Actually I am willing to pay for a private hunt and for clarification my son will not be hunting but instead just being by my shadow. I can't wait until he is old enough to hunt and either can he. He's a pretty good shot with his pellet gun and 22. Just remember...Safety...Safety...Safety...

Great hunting to all

Jess, I started out dove and rabbit hunting at that age. I have many great memories doing this with my father and grandfather. I think if it is done with great catioun in knowing there first experiences will be remembered for a life time and you do your best to pass down your knowledge and good times then everything should be fine. I have to admit my 7 year old now 8 last sunday has been pig scouting and hunting with me several times but never on a serious pig hunt. Mostly mid day adventiours with hopes of getting lucky and showing him some sign.

If your looking for private hunts, then there are many that will show you and your son a great time. For example, there is Mustang Guide services in Paso Robles, I hunted with them once, very nice guys. You can also search in the old topic, there are is a lot of info of guides and the experience guys got from them. I am sure you and your son will have a great time.

I would also take a look at the Tejon Ranch, it is right in your backyard from Bakersfield. The Pig-O-Rama's are a great bargain and the terrain ranges from fairly easy to very steep.

Just a thought,

Only problem with the POR is that they don't allow ride-alongs. Everybody has to be a paying member.

Best thing is to call around a couple of the better known guide services and see how they feel about a youngster tagging along. I doubt most of them will mind, and I know some probably encourage it.

VHRAM, I know what you mean. My dad and I don't do a whole lot of hunting together anymore because it's a little harder for him to get around now, but every year we all (my two boys, my dad and I) make opening day of dove season together. It's my favorite hunt of the year and I can't wait for the dove opener to roll around. I can't think of anything more enjoyable.
