Thursday morning I picked up my buddy and took the I5 to Paso Robles. We had a late start, and were hoping to be at Paso before 3pm to see the ranch and get orientation done. Unfortunately, I5 was closed halfway there so we had to turn back and get onto the 101. Long story shory, we got to Paso at 7pm.

Our guide was kind enough to give us orientation Friday noon, so we could hunt Friday afternoon and Saturday morning instead of our original plan of getting orientation done at Thursday afternoon and hunting all of Friday. The orientation session went great, we got shown what pig sign looked like, tons of fresh rooting across the property, and tons of tracks and rubs. The guide did great showing us what to look for and how to know what was fresh and what wasnt.

We had a two hour afternoon session on Friday, where my buddy hunted some fresh rooting sign under dropping acorns, and I hunted some draws that the pigs used to move from their beds to water. Unfortunately the wind was all over the place so the pigs probably stayed in their beds a little longer knowing that we were there. Saturday morning we changed plans up, we split up hunting draws that the pigs used to move to their beds and I ended up spotting one boar on the other side of the main road, around 400 yards away, unfortunately I couldnt get a safe shot and that piggy was moving fast.

All in all, it was a great experience and I feel like we could have done things a little different in order to increase our chances. I'll definitely be back there hopefully with a pig next time.

Thnx 4 the report, the good part of hunting on public land even though it's tough u will learn a lot on your own about hunting pigs each time u get out without having to pay a guide.
But there's nothing wrong with hiring a guide either if u can really benefit with there experience and knowledge of hunting pigs. The only thing with guides and outfitters u really want to make sure they have s great reputation just like every day contractors there are ones that r ligit and there r ones that r not and RIP u off..
Truthfully I have never needed a guide because I was very fortunate to do a lot of group hunts with very serious jho pig hunters from our forum years ago and definitely learned pretty much everything u need to know about hunting wild pigs, I am great at pig hunting but I have a curse that just keeps me from sealing the deal.
I am a 100 % sure if u really pay attention to our true consistantly jho wild pig killers advice and info that they r so kind to share with everyone here on jho it would be just as good as hiring a guide that knows what he is doing or even better with out it costing u s penny. Just take there knowledge to the field and apply it u might have great results.
But it looks like u r on the right track and look forward to your future post....tra

Thank you so much for the motivation TRA, I completely agree with you about learning most from experienced pig hunter. However I do not have that privilege as I just recently moved here so this was really my only option. I would love to go hunting with some of the JHO members, either to learn or to just get out on the field for a good time.

Thanks for posting your hunting report! The best part for me was that you had a great time, some of the most memorable hunts don't always include a harvest.

Just want to chime in and confirm what TRA said.

With a little discernment, you can pick out the good people here who are genuinely concerned and offer honest advice and notes from their direct personal experiences.

As for myself, I came here (and other places) and asked a sh*t-ton of very specific and detailed questions.

Each time of going out into the field will have you coming back with more and more specific and detailed questions to ask.

Just make sure you word them carefully so that they are easy for the experienced guys to answer quickly and briefly.

Personally, in my transformation from n00b....um... to "popped-cherry" slightly less n00b... a couple of outings with BubbleHide and the conversations had while on them proved extremely valuable to me in totally re-orienting my thought process in terms of how to go about getting deer.

And I've employed them successfully 3 times now while out solo. Was almost a 4th last year, but the lil bast@rd "ducked the string" and the arrow just barely missed him sailing within a hairs breadth over his back.

And dude... totally get yourself some TrailCams! They go such a long way at re-animating your spirits and helping to prove to yourself that you're not just some idiot walking alone around in the forest for nothing!

I've been scouting, and spotted some. I went hunting yesterday and they disappeared. I am available for questions about pig hunting. All the stuff said above is spot on.
